Adding Handwriting to Your Scrapbooks

Once I came across a note written by my mother. She passed away several years ago but seeing that note, especially the handwriting, brought back a flood of memories of the many times I saw her handwriting throughout her life. It convinced me of the importance of handwriting in our scrapbooks. I am a clean and simple type of scrapbooker so seeing my messy handwriting on a page is not attractive to me, but I have found it is essential to at least occasionally dip into the world of handwriting in my scrapbooks. Here are a few ways even someone who doesn't enjoy handwriting has been able to add it to her pages. Go Simple. Add your handwriting in simple and unobtrusive ways. Take out your pen and add the date. Start numerical like "10/10/12" and then move on to the longer structure of spelling out the date. Add names of people or places to a layout. These small additions will include a bit of you in the layout. Use Guides. It may be easier for you to include a form in which to write. You could add your handwriting along a border, around an object or in a box. The defined area can make it easier to keep your writing neat. If you have a larger area for text, then draw some lines. Use a template that creates lines, add the lines to your page and then handwrite along the lines. Use Pre-made Products. When you want to add handwriting to a page, consider using products that are made for hand journaling. Some products create space or lines for your journaling. Products such as those in the Bazzill Basics Heritage Collection provide space for you to include information about your family heritage. These are great to use for adding your heritage and your handwriting into your albums. Write Elsewhere First. A nice way to include handwriting is to not write directly on the layout. Write on a separate piece of cardstock, a journaling square, or a tab and then attach it to your layout. That way if you don't like the look of it, you can redo it before putting it on your layout. Use a Computer. Yes, I said use a computer. Today's technology allows you to use your own handwriting in many ways. You can have a font made of your own handwriting and then use it on your pages. Many people enjoy how their handwriting can look more consistent and neat as a font. You can also use a spellchecker and resize the font as needed. Another way to use a computer for your own handwriting is to use a device with a pen such as a Bamboo Tablet. It allows you to write with the pen. In my layout Making Memories, I used my tablet to write in my journaling.
Add some character and a bit of you on your layouts by including some of your handwriting. Whether in big chunks with a pen, small areas or with the aid of a computer, it will give that special touch to your layouts. Digital supplies from DesignerDigitals:
