Give it a Whirl
Pick up any decorating magazine and you will find page after page of florals, stripes and textures all blended together to create the perfect room. So how can you use products from various manufacturers to incorporate these same principles onto your layouts? Here are some techniques that may help: Match by Color - Choose one element that coordinates with your photos and build from there. If it is a patterned paper you have chosen, select colors that complement the design. In my “All Girl” layout, I chose the brown paper to draw the viewer’s eye to my daughters hair and face. Then, using the colors of the polka dots, I selected the remaining items to create a harmonious page. Match by Theme - Baseball anyone? This blend of a transparency, stickers, and assorted metals on my “Spring Training” layout helps to convey the message of the page without the need of additional journaling. Whether it is sports, pets, or holiday photos that you are working on, you are sure to find a full range of theme-related products. Blending it Together - If you are like me, you have an abundance of supplies that mix, but don’t exactly match. I have found that by using the same technique, like inking, painting or sanding the edges of each item, it will help to create a more uniform look to your design. As with most decorating schemes, the key is to keep your accents from overpowering the focal point of your photos. After that, it is all about personal style. So go on, give it a whirl and see what you can mix up on your next layout.
