It's Cool to Clash

by Lindsay Teague (Jun 28, 2004)

Most women know that the basic rule of fashion is to make sure that your clothes match. This has proved a difficult task for many of the men in our lives, so we have made it our duty to coach them in the art of "matching". Many times, you can see this basic matching rule carry over into scrapbook layouts; either the patterns will be the same or the colors will coordinate. Well, this may be the only time in your life that you hear the phrase… "Ladies, forget what you've learned and listen to your man!"

By using papers that don't necessarily go together on a layout, you are creating a new and unique feel on your page. People will be drawn to the combination of papers simply because they test the rules of design and push the boundaries of color. So, whip out those scraps of hard-to-match paper and start creating in a whole new way!

Here are some ideas to help you get started clashing in a cool way:

  • Start out slow by pairing matching patterns of paper together that have clashing colors.

  • Pick out two patterns of papers that you love individually, but would not necessarily pair together.

  • Liberate yourself and use your stash of hard-to-match or multi-colored embellishments on a page.

  • Pick out an embellishment that you have wanted to use but don't have the right coordinating papers to go with it. Then, go through your patterned paper and select a few different pieces that would match the embellishment piece, but not each other. This embellishment will make you feel like your page ties together in the end.

  • Grab your color wheel and start pairing colors that you never have before (this will give you a small preview of what your page could look like.

  • If you are having trouble, mount your patterned paper onto a solid piece of cardstock like brown, black or white to take away some of the dissonance.

  • Create a layout using nicely matching colors and throw a splash of a different color on there (i.e. a brightly colored clip, a mismatched tag, or a contrasting piece of ribbon).

Intentionally clashing your papers and embellishments can be a positive, fun and rewarding experience. Let your inhibitions go and feel free to use your paper in a whole new way…you'll love the results!
