Creating Your Own Journaling Cards

by Gwynn Asbury (Mar 18, 2013)

One of the most popular trends in scrapbooking right now is journaling cards and title cards. It isn't uncommon for paper lines to come with a double-sided sheet where one side includes journaling and title cards.  Recently, there was a challenge on the Scrapjazz forum in which the patrons were challenged to create tags from their leftover bits and pieces and a single sheet of 12"x12" cardstock.  This got me to thinking about journaling and title cards.

Today, I thought I would share with you all how to create your own journaling and title cards.  You may be wondering why on earth you would want to create your own journaling or title cards instead of purchasing them.  First, by creating your own you will always have the perfectly matched journaling or title card for your themed or non-themed projects.  Second, by creating your own you get more variety, creativity, and uniqueness.  Third, this is a great way to use up odds and ends and scraps, and get more use out of your supplies.  Fourth, this is a technique that can be used to create your own Project Life supplies - giving you the best of both worlds.

Supplies

  • 12"x12" scrapbook paper with a grid or ledger pattern
  • leftover scraps of various colors, sizes, and patterns
  • stamps
  • dies
  • stickers
  • other embellishments

Directions

1.      Cut down your grid or ledger paper to 3"x4" or 4"x6", or stamp your grid or ledger pattern and then cut it to size. In mine, I stamped the ledger pattern.

2.      Use your stamps, die cuts, paper, stickers, and other embellishments to decorate your journaling cards.

Ideas for Your Journaling (or Title) Cards

  • Use your stamps to stamp sentiments for use as title cards for a scrapbook layout, in Project Life style projects, or as part of an art journal or junk journal.

  • Use die cuts to create shaped outlines or journaling spaces on your journal cards.

  • Bought a sheet of journaling cards or title cards that you absolutely love but that don't match your current project?  Recreate their look with your paper scraps and on-hand supplies for a customized and perfectly matching embellishment.

  • Use your leftover bits and pieces of rub-ons as elements on your journaling or title cards.

 Tips and Techniques

  • Instead of using 12"x12" ledger or grid paper, use plain cardstock and grid or ledger stamps.

  • Instead of cutting down 12"x12" paper, use various sizes of rectangle or square scraps or 8 ½"x11" cardstock cut down to equal sizes.

  • Making your journaling cards can be made even easier by laying out all the cards and placing bits and pieces on the cards at the same time. (You can see this process in the photo above included in the directions section.)
