Layouts Without Photos

by Tiffany Roberts (Sep 11, 2008)
Storytelling is an important component of a dynamic scrapbook layout. We tell our stories through our photos, title and embellishments - but nothing tells your personal story with more strength or style than journaling.

When we are left without photos, but still have something important to say it requires us to take our creativity to a new level. How can you effectively express yourself without those photos to draw inspiration from? What about flow, layout design, and embellishment?

The embellishments you choose, their placement, your font/handwriting choice, and color scheme will be important elements to consider when you do not have photos to rely on. You'll want to experiment with aspects of your layout you may normally overlook such as the shape and scale of your lettering, or with the addition of memorabilia and visual elements that go along with your journaling.

You can still achieve a dynamic layout, even without photos. I hope the following layouts inspire you to create memorable pages that help express your style and artistic vision.

Things I'll Miss

This is a simple layout created for my Book of Me. I have very few photos of myself, especially as a child. Even as adult I find that I'm behind the camera far more than I am the subject of the photos being taken. This has resulted in a scrapbook full of layouts that don't have any photos. I have to rely on storytelling and accents to share my history and point of view.

The colors for this layout were pulled from the dragonfly accent. It is said that the dragonfly symbolizes enlightenment and harmony. I thought that it was an appropriate symbol for a layout about the balance between missing the things you give up as you get older, and some of the things you happily leave behind.

The journaling was created on my computer to balance each side of the layout. List-style layouts work well when you don't have photos to accompany your journaling.

Supplies

  • cardstock - Paper Accents
  • dragonfly accent - EK Success
  • star eyelets
  • computer fonts - Architect (journaling), Unknown (Title)
  • colored wire
  • adhesive mesh - Magic Mesh

My Name

This is the first layout in my Book of Me album. I used one of my favorite computer fonts and did a little research on the meaning of my names. Vellum paper was perfect for this text-rich layout because it allowed the background patterns to be visible and kept everything light. The metallic letters and flower from Making Memories give the layout a little texture.

G33K Speak

This layout was created for a past article on gamer-related layouts. I'm an avid online gamer and it was fun to add this theme into my Book of Me. I enjoyed doing something a little different on this one by creating lift-up flaps. On the front is the "gamer lingo" and underneath is a definition of the word or phrase. A few accents in bright colors and lots of different fonts keep this layout light and funky.
