Old Supplies, New Designs: Fibers

by Jennifer Sizemore (Apr 14, 2006)

I will confess. I will confess to going a bit overboard sometimes in my scrapbook product obsessions. It really isn't a horrible problem to have, at least while I still have some space. After all, someday I will use all 432 colors of eyelets that I bought in quantities of 100. I'll use them right after I use the seventeen packs of nameplates in eight beautiful colors and finishes. Now that I have confessed to those, I guess it won't surprise you that I have four photo boxes stuffed full of beautiful fibers in every shade of the rainbow.

Since I have decided to use more of my stash and not spend anything until I do (c'mon, I KNOW you have said that a time or two), I am going to invite you to join me. Pull out your fibers for a fresh look.

One of the best ways to use older products is to use it with techniques and other products that are currently popular. Think about the hot trends you see throughout idea books and on Scrapjazz: whimsical, stamped, layered, chipboard, big graphics. Take some of these popular looks and modify them or combine them with your fibers.

Sewing

  • Place fiber on your project with a little adhesive. Use your sewing machine to attach it to the page.

  • Use thin fibers as thread for hand stitching. Poke your holes first to make it a little easier and allow the fiber to pass through the paper without ripping. Try a simple zigzag stitch line, or create a stem for a flower.

Doodling

  • Create flourishes, arrows or other doodles with glue, and then lay fiber directly on the glue lines.

  • Cut patterned paper or cardstock into geometrical shapes or wavy lines. Glue fiber along the edge of the paper line.

  • Twist fiber into whimsical floral shapes and add a center to disguise where all the fibers cross.

  • Draw a border around a photo with glue and then attach fiber. Use an accent to cover the corner where they meet.

Ribbon

  • Tie fiber onto the edges of your paper or accents. Use two or more for a fuller look, and crop after tying.

  • Stretch one or more fibers across your page, and then tie the same or a coordinating fiber on a few spots to dangle.

  • Wrap fiber around part of a monogram or big letter in a title. Finish it off by tying on a charm.

Stamping

  • Decorate or accent your stamped images with fiber, such as adding a fiber stem to a flower or stripes in a stamped flag.

  • Use fibers to create a resist look in stamping. Lay fibers in a pattern on your paper, then using a shadow stamp, ink around the fibers. The white stripe in the colored backgrounds was made by stamping over a wide fiber strand.
