Fabric Store Finds

by Allyson Bright (Mar 28, 2006)

Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved visiting fabric stores. While my skills as a seamstress come and go, I am always inspired by the rows filled with bolts of fabric, ribbons and trims in every color and texture, and all of the little notions and extras filling the aisles. Fabric stores just radiate with creative possibility.

Some fabric store staple items have found their way onto thousands of scrapbook pages already. But the possibilities don't end there. Next time you hit the fabric store, keep your eyes peeled for these fun finds.

Trims

You'll find tons of ribbon here, and it will likely be cheaper than it's priced at your local scrapbook store. Beyond ribbon, unique pieces of trim and seam tapes are also found in large quantities. On a recent visit, I was lucky enough to discover some denim trim with grommets, plain twill tape, and a unique organza ribbon covered in sequins.

Dyes

A fabric store is a sure bet for all kinds of dyes and colorants. Look for permanent, non-toxic dyes to ensure a scrapbook-safe match. Many dyes now come in spray bottles, which can be used to create a fun splattered look on your pages. You can also use dye to create custom color schemes for your papers and embellishments.

Lace

Great for heritage layouts, lace will add a beautiful and feminine touch to your projects. Look for it by-the-yard or on individual spools.

Fabric Remnants

There's always a bargain in the remnant bin. Fabric remnants are small pieces of fabric (usually less than one yard) that are rolled up and sold at a steep discount to customers. These small pieces aren't great for seamstresses, but they're perfect for scrapbookers. Try draping fabric pieces across your page, or create custom embellishments using small pieces. You could even create a quilted scrapbook page!

Yarn

Not just for knitters, yarn can be used in the same way you'd use ribbon or trim. If you do have skills in knitting and/or crochet, consider creating your own embellishments for a layout.

Felt Squares

Felt squares aren't just for kids anymore. Sold in fun, bright colors for just pennies, these fabric pieces are great for adding instant texture to your scrapbook page while maintaining a whimsical look.

Iron-On Patches & Letters

Iron-ons are just starting to make a splash in the scrapbooking industry, but don't forget that the fabric store is still your number one source for iron-on items. You'll find letters, monograms, and alphabets in all sorts of colors and styles. Also look for unique embroidered patches-florals, music notes, military insignia, even zodiac signs! Simply follow the manufacturer's directions to adhere the letter or patch to your page. You'll get a fabulous textured look, as well as scrapbook design that will stand apart from your other pages.

No matter what items you choose to use, your local fabric store is a treasure trove of inspiration and products that will help you create layouts and projects that are truly unique. Don't forget to shop the clearance aisle while you're there, as many bargains are perfect for scrapbookers.

Texture, color, dimension, and more. All this can be yours-found within the walls of your local fabric store.
