Using Artist’s Canvas in Scrapbooks

by Missy Fortenberry (Feb 6, 2006)

Pre-primed canvas is the perfect medium to create a variety of embellishments that can be used on your layouts. It is sold in pads of 10 to 12 sheets in a variety of sizes and can creatively be used to make titles and other elements.

Advantages:

  • Durable - It is very durable so it's the perfect background to layer acrylic paint, gel medium, ink and other wet media.
  • Color Options - The only limitation to color is the supply of paints that you have on hand.
  • Texture - There is natural texture to the canvas making it a nice alternative for when a flat, smooth surface just won't work.
  • Versatile - It can be cut into any shape or size needed and will not ravel or fray.

Disadvantages:

  • Adhesion - The only disadvantage is that it's a bit difficult to adhere to the layout. Glue sticks and adhesive tabs don't work but glue dots are perfect.

Canvas is used in three different layouts that accompany this article. Two of them use canvas in the title but in different ways, and the last uses the canvas to make a page embellishment. All were painted with Liquitex Basics acrylic paints.

Painted & Cut Title

The simplest example is "Guy Stuff." A small piece of canvas that measured approximately 4" x 6" was painted with red and blue to coordinate with the can of shaving cream in the photo. Stencils were used to draw the letters for "guy" which were then cut out. "Stuff" is stamped on with black ink using small letter stamps from the $1 section at Target.

Painted & Drawn Title

The next title was a bit more difficult. A 2" x 12" section of canvas was painted pale pink. After it was thoroughly dried, "love" was hand-painted using a flat paintbrush and then outlined with a black pen. The rest of the title is done with stickers from Doodle Bug and Wordsworth. There are also two heart shapes that were painted and detailed with black ink. The larger has a quote stamped on using Celtic letters from PSX.

Painted & Cut Embellishment

Canvas was used to create the large flower embellishment in the last layout. Approximately ¾ of a 9" x 12" sheet of canvas was painted bright pink and the remainder was painted green. Petals and leaves for the flower were cut out of the appropriate colors of canvas. Green rickrack in two sizes was used for the stem and leaves. Pink grosgrain ribbon was tied in the center of the button that goes in the middle of the flower. The quote was hand-written with two sizes of black pens.

There are many more ways that artist canvas could be used. Photos could be printed on it, or mats, tags and journaling boxes made. These examples are only a small sampling.
