Faux Fabulous: Leather

by Tiffany Roberts (Jul 18, 2006)

This installment of our faux fabulous series explores ways to create realistic-looking leather accents from common craft materials.

Masking Tape Background
Supplies: 1 sheet of white cardstock, household masking tape (masking tape is normally not acid-free, so look for acid-free masking tape if that is important to you), pigment ink in multiple shades of brown, clear embossing powder, heat gun.

Instructions: Begin by covering your white cardstock with small pieces of masking tape. Be sure to cover all areas well, overlapping the tape randomly. Once your paper is covered apply ink by patting the stamp pad directly on top of the tape. Sprinkle clear embossing powder on top of the ink and heat set for a shiny leather look. See the image below for the before-inking-and-heat-embossing shot, and an after-inking-and-heat-embossing shot.

The background on this card was created with this technique. After creating the faux leather I trimmed it to the necessary size and inked the edges.

Faux Leather Letters
Supplies: tan fun foam, sharp paper trimmer or personal die-cut machine, dark brown permanent ink, various shades of brown pigment ink pads, small alphabet stamps, and heat gun.

Instructions: Begin by cutting your fun foam into a long strip the width of your desired faux leather tiles. I usually cut my strip 1/3 inch wide. Next, heat up the foam for a moment until you see the edges start to curl. Quickly ink your letter stamp and press it into the warm foam. Be sure to leave enough room between letters to trim them into boxes once you are done stamping your saying. Trim each letter and apply multiple shades of brown pigment ink to the edges. You can also use your personal die-cut machine to make your letters on small tags, circles, or flower centers.

To create the title letters for a "Woody and Friends" layout, I used this technique. I punched the tiny tags from the foam prior to heating and stamping. This makes getting your letters centered a little trickier, but allows for some very creative alternatives to this technique.

Faux Aged Leather
Supplies: tan cardstock, squirt bottle, heat gun or hot iron, dark brown chalks and ink pad.

Instructions: Choose the size, shape, and color of your cardstock. This technique looks great with torn pieces of paper. Moisten your paper with the water until damp, but not falling apart. Wrinkle and fold paper to age it. The more wrinkled the better for this technique. Unfold your paper, and use the iron or heat gun to dry it well. Once dry, rub the creased and raised areas with shades of brown chalk. Ink the edges for added interest.

The tag shown used this technique to coordinate with the vintage papers.

Faux Suede Embellishments
Supplies: household wax paper, liquid appliqué, rubber brayer, cardstock in a color that matches the liquid appliqué, heat gun, die-cutting system, and paper punches (or other cutting tools).

Instructions: Start by squirting your liquid appliqué onto the waxy side of household wax paper. Roll the rubber brayer through the liquid appliqué until the brayer is evenly covered. Then foll the brayer onto a sheet of cardstock until you have an even layer. Once you are done be sure to wash your brayer immediately so that the appliqué doesn't dry on the surface. Heat the appliqué until it rises and produces a suede texture. You can now die cut, trim, hand cut, or punch any shape you desire from your piece of faux suede.

The Happy Hearts Preschool layout has imitation leather flowers that look remarkably like expensive ones found in the embellishment aisle of my local scrapbook store. I also used an additional scrap to create the heart in the title.

Remember that leather comes in all different colors. For the purpose of this article I created most of my examples in shades of brown, but you could easily alter these instructions to create faux leather backgrounds and embellishments in any number of fashionable colors.
