Giving Your Pages “Bling-bling!”

by Denise Gormish (Feb 1, 2006)

Everywhere in the fashion industry, you'll see sparkle being added to clothes. From rhinestones on shirts to glitter on jeans, "bling-bling" has hit the fashion industry. The term “bling-bling” refers to wearing expensive shiny jewelery and bright fashionable clothes in order to attract attention to yourself, according to the Oxford dictionary. The "bling-bling" style has hit the scrapbook industry as well. New products like Heidi Swapp glitter iron-ons and jewels have been popular. At the same time old products like crafting rhinestones and mirrors are being used on scrapbook pages as well. With a little use of "bling-bling" you can add some extra sparkle to your scrapbook pages and projects.

Here are some suggested products for adding sparkle:

Rhinestones - Most craft stores carry a full assortment of rhinestones. In various colors, shapes and sizes, rhinestones are very versatile. They can be easily applied with a glue dot or glue adhesive. On scrapbook pages and craft projects, rhinestones can be used as a solitary embellishment, as a border or with other embellishments. Consider adding rhinestones to tags, in the center of flowers or as a decoration on a frame.

In my layout, "On Loan," I added rhinestones to the center of the flowers for an extra sparkle.

Glitter - Glitter has traditionally been used in card making to add luster and shine. Glitter, often purchased in small bottles and in various colors, can be added to scrapbook pages too. To add glitter to your project, apply a clear-drying adhesive to the desired location then sprinkle it with the glitter. Wipe away any excess glitter. Alternatively, use acid-free glitter glue. For easy application use pre-glittered stickers, pre-glittered iron-ons or glittered paper.

Shimmering Ribbon - A shimmering ribbon makes an eye-catching shiny embellishment. Gold or other shiny ribbons will give a glamorous look to any project. Adhere the ribbon with a clear adhesive, or glue dots. Consider wrapping the ribbon around the layout or project. You could also use ribbon as a border or as an accent.

Heat Embossing - By using embossing powder you can create a raised, shiny coating of a stamped image or other area of your layout or craft project. The basics of heat embossing are featured in Maureen Spell's article, Heat Embossing Basics. Notice the luster and shine given by the embossing powder especially with a gold or opalescent powder.

In my layout, "Half Dome," I sprinkled opalescent embossing powder around the edges of the layout and heat embossed it. Additionally, I heat embossed the title to give it extra shine.

Mirrors - Small craft mirrors in circles, squares and rectangles can be used to embellish a page. Adhere mirrors with a clear adhesive, or glue dots. Use your imagination when considering the many possibilities with mirrors. For example, consider using a row of small mirrors for a border, using a mirror for a photo corner or adding a round mirror to the center of a flower.
