Bottle Cap Mania

by Lindsay Teague (Jul 11, 2005)

Did you ever think that something as simple as a coke bottle top would make it into your scrapbook? I have to say, I didn’t see it coming. Someone really had their thinking cap on when they decided to manufacture these with sentiments pre-printed on the top. What a great idea and fun addition to any scrapbook page!

When bottle caps first hit the scene, they were pretty “cookie-cutter.” You could place them around on your page, but couldn’t do much with them. These days, bottle caps are extremely versatile and can be used in a whole host of fashions. Here are a few ways to jazz up your next scrapbook page with these little embellishments:

  • Smash them with a hammer. If there is foam adhesive on the back, simply remove it first and then smash away. This will help eliminate some of the bulk that comes with using bottle caps as embellishments.

  • Paint them and add your own sentiments such as a monogram or a word with rub-ons. These bottle caps will become completely customizable.

  • Buy a bottle of soda that has been around for generations (like a Stewarts Soda or IBC Root Beer) and then place that bottle cap on your next heritage page for a perfect not-so-vintage embellishment.

  • Use your circle punch to create a custom cover for a bottle cap. You can use your printer to print a design on the top or create your own with a pen or rub-ons.

  • Create a funky card or project by cutting a face out of a picture and using that as the top of the bottle cap. You can lay the bottle cap over where the face should be in the picture for a different 3-D effect or simply use it as an embellishment.

  • Flip your bottle cap over and paint the inside. Now you can use the inside as a mini frame.

  • For a truly rustic look, try distressing your bottle caps in different ways such as rubbing it over the sidewalk. This will give them a really unique, distressed look.

The possibilities are literally endless. Be creative with them and they will become some of your favorite additions to your pages. Besides, it’ll give you an excuse to drink one of those good old bottled root beers. What a great summer treat!
