Shining Stars: 11 Star Embellishment Ideas

by Rachel Myerson (Aug 28, 2007)

"Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are..."

This little tune is sung by moms, dads, and grandparents all over the country to put their babies to sleep. Likewise, moms use stars to embellish layouts of those sleeping babies. However, stars are also often used with themes of outer space, baseball, patriotism (here in the US), and boys in general. Whether you scrap about these topics, or just want to add stars to your layouts, here are 11 examples of embellishments using stars.

  1. Stamp your stars - I'm a big fan of stamping on my layouts. In this layout, I used a border stamp with stars to give a patriotic feel:

To give an outer space feel, add glitter to a stamped star. For this star, I simply traced the stamp with a glue pen and added some glitter:

  2. Use your stars to hold letters - For this card, I punched stars out of patterned paper, inked the edges, and stamped a letter into the middle of each star:

  3. Use your stars for mini-photos - For my son's birthday party, I wanted to include a photo of each guest, but didn't really have suitable photos of all of them. By punching their faces into stars, I managed to include each child's face while de-emphasizing the lack of photo quality.

  4. Use chipboard stars - Chipboard stars can be decorated in a variety of ways to create interesting embellishments. In this layout, mjbee colored her chipboard star with a marker, outlined it with a white pen, and added ribbon to the center:

(This layout also illustrates our next two star embellishments.)

  5. Add star brads - Star brads are easy to find and easy to use.
  6. Use star-shaped ribbon slides - These metal embellishments are a creative way to add stars across a long ribbon.
  7. Add star-shaped buttons - Star buttons are another easy way to add stars, as in this layout, also by mjbee:

  8. Cut stars from patterned paper:

  9. Change the number of points - Although we often think of stars as having five points, star embellishments can be made with different numbers of points as well. For the last two star embellishments, I used six-pointed stars in this layout about a historic synagogue:

  10. Use a photo of a star - I used the photo of a six-pointed star on a gate to complement the stamped star and ribbon star on the layout .

  11. Make a star from ribbons - It was very easy to make a six-pointed star using two colors of self-adhesive ribbon. By creatively arranging the pieces of ribbon, it is possible to make a star with any number of points.

Whether you are scrapping traditional star themes, or just want the look of star embellishments, you can use these ideas to add all types of star embellishments to your layouts. Don't forget to post your star-embellished layouts in the gallery.
