Magnetize Your Layouts

by Laura Arellano-Weddleton (Apr 24, 2007)

Have you tried magnetic embellishments on your pages yet? They're a unique way to add dimension to your pages. They can be useful both as closures for albums and as a way to add removable elements to scrapbook layouts. Here are just a few ideas for incorporating magnets into scrapbooking.

Album Closures

BasicGrey was one of the first to offer magnetic embellishments, and their beautiful magnetic buckles are a wonderful way to keep albums closed. As they're meant to string onto ribbon, you have a great amount of flexibility in terms of what ribbon you choose and where you place them on your albums. They could also be used on pages to close a mini album on a page or to hide journaling.

Interactive Magnetic Elements

In addition to magnetic buckles, BasicGrey offers magnetic snaps, which have a multitude of uses. Because you can easily remove and replace something that's been added magnetically to a page, they're great for hidden journaling. Attach a photo to your page with magnetic snaps to hide journaling written below.

This can also be a fun way to add embellishments to your pages. Bazzill makes magnetic frames that could be added to your pages with the magnetic snaps. Put a picture in the frame, embellish it, then place it on your page and take it off again when you want to see what's underneath.

Using the magnetic snaps in a similar way, you could add other magnetic objects to your page, like magnets that you collect on a trip or find in your house. Use your creativity and search for magnetic things that might be used as an embellishment!

Magnetic Embellishments

Did you know that there's also such a thing as magnetic paper? WUBE makes kits with magnetic paper, cardstock, words, and adhesives to allow you to use magnetic paper elements on your pages. The items in the kit give you a good starting place, but with magnetic paper, the only limit is your imagination in terms of what you could do with it.

Around the Block also makes magnetic clips that can be added to your pages with brads to hold photos, memorabilia or journaling that you want to be able to remove later. This is a nice way to avoid permanent adhesion for one-of-a-kind keepsakes.

Making Your Own Magnets

Using your scrapbooking supplies, it's also possible to make your own magnets. Xyron has magnetic refills for its machines that allow you to put magnetic backings onto whatever you can run through the machine. Possibilities would be embellished tags or BasicGrey monograms, but again, the only limit here is your imagination.

Magnets are an extremely interesting element to add to your pages. They're a neat way to add elements that can later be removed and then placed back again without any damage to your pages, which can allow for hidden journaling and layered photos. Grab some magnetic scrapbook embellishments, and start experimenting with them today!
