Pedal to the Metal

by Trish Dykes (Jan 31, 2007)

No doubt, the competitive race is definitely on in the scrapbooking world. We see it evolve so rapidly that it is hard sometimes to keep up with the changing pace. In a quest to come out on top, I have noticed both manufacturers and designers going the extra mile to stay ahead of the creative push.

Lately, it seems as though everything is fair game on our layouts as we have watched the most basic items make it into the scrapbooking arena. Somehow things like staples, paperclips, brads and household hardware are made extraordinary with new packaging and smart marketing. While I certainly don't condemn companies for doing this, I do find it comical to think about how valuable our ‘junk drawer' items have become.

Metal embellishments seem to be some of the most popular on the market these days and with good reason. They are durable, long-lasting and most are easy to use. Binder clips, charms, eyelets, bookplates and alphabets are just a few of the many metals widely available. They are perfect for adding some depth and dimension to our layouts. You didn't think the manufacturers stopped there, did you? If so, we would be forgetting about the frames, hat pins, word plaques, license plates, bottle caps, metal mesh, and good old-fashioned wire that are all within the reach of consumers as well.

While the supplies may be overwhelming, using them doesn't have to be. Here are some useful tips for incorporating metal accents into your next project or layout.

  • Heavy Weights: Some metals can be weighty on a page. Be sure to use heavy-grade patterned papers or cardstock to support the item without tearing the paper.

  • Changing of the Guards: Did you know that you can color most metals to match your theme or style? Try embossing powders, paint pens, spray paint, or StazOn brand inks. Test a small area on the back of the embellishment until you are pleased with the result.
  • The Hokey Pokey: Remember that any sharp or pointed edges on the metal can damage your photos if they come in contact with them. To be safe, you may want to use duplicate photos. If metal items are bulky, trim 1/8" to 1/4" off the width of your layout to make it fit in your scrapbook better. Consider using a heavy-weight (thicker) page protector for these layouts as well, to act as a cushion against the other pages in your album.
  • Tacky, Tacky: Unless they come with an adhesive backing, adhering these embellishments to your layout can be a challenge. There are a variety of liquid metal-specific glues available that will work pretty well for lighter materials or you could try Glue Dot-type adhesives. For heavier pieces, you might want to use a stronger bonding agent like E6000 (found at most craft and hardware stores). For best results, follow the manufacturer's instructions when using the product for the first time. In addition, metal mesh can be stapled or sewn to your layout with little effort.
  • The Great Pretender: If you are a flat-page scrapper, but still like the look of metal, there are options for you too. Some manufacturers have created embellishments and patterned papers that are look-alikes to the real thing. Shortcuts! Crafts have a line of products called Metal Effects, Tumblebeasts has stickers that resemble metal mesh and All My Memories has created a line of cardstock stickers that resemble metal-rimmed tags. You can look at Pebbles Inc, and Paper Loft companies to find a variety of textured and printed cardstock papers with a metal look.
