Simplify with Monthly Collages

I've been scrapbooking for several years--well before we had children. When people would ask me how I found time to scrapbook it always sort of confused me. That's what I liked doing with my time, so of course I found time to do it. What I didn't really understand is that once you have children, you don't get near as much "play" time for yourself anymore.

As we began planning our family, I started getting a little concerned about my ability to keep up with all my albums, especially when you add baby albums to the mix. I came up with a solution for my scrapbooks that I knew I could handle throughout the years: monthly collages.

In my daughter's "First Year" album, I've included 12 monthly collages of photographs to show her growing and changing. They've been the easiest layouts to make (often in only five minutes), and some of the most important I've ever created.

1. Choose a Design. I chose a simple blocked design with space for eight square photos and one journaling square.
2. Pick Photos. At the end of every month, I went through my photographs and chose eight of my favorite pictures from the month.
3. Crop & Adhere. I cropped each photo to the right size, added my journaling and a couple of small embellishments, and my monthly page was complete.

It's simple, and best of all, it helps you stay caught up (or get caught up) with your albums. Remember, you can always go back and add more pages later if you want to get more detailed and have a little more fun with your layouts.

This monthly collage system isn't limited just to baby albums. They're a great way to condense and document family activities, school-age children's art projects, and so much more. It can even be expanded and adapted to cover a full year or even several years (such as with school portraits)!
