Perfectly Charming Pages!

by Cynthia Coulon (Jun 30, 2003)

My grandmother would never leave the house until she put on some kind of jewelry. No outfit was complete without it! She had drawers full of rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, broaches, and pins--something to suit every occasion. And somehow, even when she wore a sweatshirt, the baubles that adorned her didn’t look ridiculous. Jewelry was just a part of who she was, and she wore it well!

I’m not like her in that way. I rarely ware jewelry. But, I AM like her in that I too have drawers full of adornments! Only, they are for my scrapbooks, not my wardrobe.

Jewelry and charms can add just the right finishing touch a layout needs. They are a fun and simple way to add decoration, dimension, interest, and texture to a page.

Charms can be found in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and themes—something to suit every occasion! A huge variety of charms specifically designed for scrapbooks and cards are available at craft/hobby and scrapbook stores. And there are other sources as well. I’ve made some great charm and jewelry finds at my local “dollar” store and thrift store. I also frequent the jewelry making aisles at the craft/hobby stores. Oh yeah, please don’t tell, but I’ve also snagged a few things out of my husband’s fly-fishing supplies!

Attaching charms to pages can be just as much fun as choosing what charms to use. They can be dangled from rings or shaped clips, attached to tags, strung onto wire or fibers, sewn into place, put inside shaker boxes, adhered directly to paper, and so on!

When sticking jewelry or charms directly to paper, it is important to consider the weight of the pieces. If a charm is heavy, a sturdy adhesive, such as glue dots or E600, should be used.

Charms and jewelry can add some bulk to scrapbook pages. So, albums should be stored so that the pages are upright, and not pressing on one another. This way, page accents won’t make any marks or indentations in other pages.

To be on the safe side, I don’t generally place charms or jewelry in direct contact with photos on a layout. If I’m not sure that an embellishment is photo-safe, I keep it off my photos.

Here are a few examples of ways I have used charms and jewelry.

On the first tag the golden frame around the clock face is a charm from WithCharm.com. I secured it to the tag with a liquid adhesive.

The second tag has a charm that is looped through a decorative clip. This sun charm is from a large set of charms and beads I bought at a “dollar” store. It is actually plastic, but looks metal.

The next example has charms dangling on fibers. These charms are also from WithCharm.com.

In the last example I used a heart from a cheap necklace. I cut the shank off and then used Glue Dots to stick it to the paper.

Finally, this is a border with several charms at the bottom of a layout. I glued some of the charms to the paper and looped some through the fibers.

There really are no rules about how to use charms or jewelry on scrapbook pages. Just experiment, get creative, and enjoy!
