Add Texture to your Pages with Texture Paste
I’m constantly looking for something to bring texture into my layouts. It can be anything from embellishments to paper, but that 3-dimensional look is a must-have. There are quite a few art mediums that will bring that feel to your pages, but none quite like texture paste.
Often called modeling paste, the best texture paste on the market (in my opinion) is produced by Liquitex. It comes in the regular variety as well as “light,” which basically takes some of the weight out of the product so it’s not as heavy on your pages or projects. Here are some different ideas on how to use them and the tools you’ll need to get started.
Getting Started
Getting started with texture paste is extremely easy. The best part about this whole process is that there’s no wrong way to use it! All you’ll need is the jar of paste, some cardstock or paper, a stencil and a painting knife.
When you apply the paste, add it to whatever thickness suits you and the look you want to achieve. If you want bulk, apply a thick layer of paste. If you want just a little bit of texture, apply a thin layer. A good rule of thumb is that the paste will usually be thicker than you think. When you apply it over a stencil, always scrape the excess paste off with your painting knife and deposit it back into the jar. When you lift the stencil up, you’ll have just the right amount of texture.
Here are a few ideas for how to incorporate texture paste into your scrapbook pages:
- Get a stencil from a craft store (often used for painting shapes or objects on walls) and a painting knife. Tape or adhere the stencil down to your page or paper and put a light coat of the paste on top of it with the knife. Make sure you scrape off the excess and put it back into the jar. After a couple minutes, lift the stencil off the paper and your design will be on your project. It will become hard after about 10 minutes.
- Needing a little color kick, rather than the plain white straight-from-the-jar look? Try mixing a small amount of acrylic paint to the paste and then applying it. Continue adding paint to achieve the desired color.
- Try edging your project or layout with the texture paste. This is especially effective for winter layouts if you leave it white. It looks just like snow.
- For a totally different look, apply the paste and let it dry, and then go over it with acrylic paint for your own custom page patterns.
- Try spraying the paste down with a heavy dose of walnut ink or just adding walnut ink crystals to your paste before applying it. This will give you a great vintage look.
- Take texture to the next level by building up! Add the paste to anything that’s looking flat like a picture or embellishment. You can use a portion of your stencil to add a small flower to the edge of your picture or just edge one of your embellishments.
Once you have the stuff in your stash, you’ll be using it all the time. It adds a really fun artsy look to any page or project. As long as you cover it quickly, a jar of this paste will last you for a long time. Have fun creating.
