Using Clear Mediums

by Jennifer Sizemore (Apr 27, 2007)

Crystal Lacquer, Diamond Glaze, and Glossy Accents are adhesive products that dry clear and shiny. These versatile mediums allow you add dimension and a glossy look to your paper art projects. They are acid-free and non-toxic; they can be customized with food coloring, dye-based inks, watercolor, pearlescent pigments, alcohol inks, and pastel chalks. They dry to a hard finish.

Tips:

  • Never shake the bottle.
  • Store upside-down in a cup to prevent air bubbles.
  • Pop air bubbles with a pin.
  • Drag remaining air bubbles off the edge of the project with the applicator tip or a pin.
  • Store at room temperature.
  • Keep the tip clean.
  • Keep the cap tight.
  • Do not lift the tip from the surface while applying.
  • Apply slowly.
  • Use air from embossing gun or hair dryer to help project dry more quickly.
  • Work on a non-stick surface.
  • Set project aside from work area to dry. (Accidents tend to happen around wet projects.)
  • Clean spills while medium is still wet.
  • A thick application of the medium may take 3-4 hours to dry, so plan appropriately and be patient.

Ideas:

Faux Epoxy Sticker - Almost any sticker or stamped image can be made to look like an epoxy sticker with a little clear medium. Simply apply a thick layer to your image, extending past the edges. Allow to dry completely and then cut out the image.

Framed Embellishment - Apply a thick layer of clear medium over a stamped image, sticker or photograph. Place your frame or metal-rimmed tag on top of the image, using the lacquer as adhesive to hold down the tag. Add more medium until the frame is full. Allow to dry and then trim away the excess paper around the frame. Add small beads or glitter while the glue is still wet for additional dimension.

Bottlecap Embellishment - Place a stamped image or accent at the bottom of a bottlecap. Fill with clear medium and allow to completely dry.

A few more ideas:

  • Apply clear glaze as dew drops on a silk flower.
  • Punch raindrops and cover with clear glaze.
  • Add glaze to the top of a pre-made embellishment to make it appear more handmade.
  • Doodle on chipboard and coat with Diamond Glaze.
  • Sprinkle fine glitter on top of wet glaze for extra shimmer.
