Altered RIT Dye Box Album
As I stood in the laundry aisle I could already hear it: "Why did you buy that many boxes of dye??" my loving, but skeptical, husband would ask. "I'm going to use them for scrapbooking," I'd calmly answer. "How?" "I don't know yet, but I'll think of something." With that, I filled my basket with the intriguing little boxes and went home to create. Supplies needed to make one RIT® box mini album: two boxes RIT® dye ribbon: (Based on my seven pictures - adjust measurements as needed) - 1 ½ feet of 1 in. wide ribbon
- 1 ½ feet of ¼ in. wide ribbon
- Extra for embellishment bows, if desired
stickers (I used stickers from Making Memories and Doodlebug Designs) cardstock/patterned paper embellishments (My Charmed Plaque and Ribbon Slide are from Making Memories) acrylic paint, if desired Making the box: - Open one RIT® at both ends (save dye packet for another project).
- Turn box face-down. Tear along perforated edge.
- Cut opposite edge, separating the back of the box from the sides and front.
**Don't throw away this back panel! We'll use it later!** - Fold in the small tabs connected to the box's long sides.
- Place strong adhesive (such as double-sided Super Tape) on each end flap, where the box states "Directions."
- Fold in each end flap (where you placed adhesive) and adhere the end to the edge that states "For your Special Laundry needs..."
*The long walls of the box should move in and out of this folded envelope. This gives the boxes room to fit around each other. - Repeat with opposite end.
- Repeat with second RIT® box.
Making the accordion album: Take the cut-off back from one RIT® box and cut ¼ inch from one side and 1/8 inch from the top edge. This will be your template for cutting the "pages" of the album. - Using template, cut seven "pages" of cardstock. *Always make an odd number of "pages."* Embellish with photos, stickers, journaling, etc.
- Lay "pages" face-down on your work space, long sides next to each other, about 1/8 inch apart. Starting with the "page" farthest on the left, adhere the 1 inch wide ribbon in the center of the rectangle. Continue across the row, attaching the ribbon to the back of each rectangle. Cut ribbon about 1 inch past the last "page."
- Place adhesive on the back of the far-right rectangle. Adhere this to the inside of one box.
- Accordion-fold rectangles into the box.
Finishing Touches: Embellish box top with Charmed Plaque that has been wiped with acrylic paint. Let dry. With lid on box, turn over completed box. Adhere ¼ inch ribbon to the middle of the box, leaving two ends for tying around the front of the box. Pull around front and tie, placing a Ribbon Slide in the middle of the bow. That's it! Enjoy your altered RIT® box and album - perfect for giving or keeping!
