5 Years: Step-by-Step

by Andrea Steed (Nov 3, 2005)

A little peek of a busy patterned paper can go a long way. In this layout, I used just a couple strips of patterned paper to pull out the colors in the photograph and add some punch to the page. Here’s how this layout was made:

Supplies:
Wet Paint Yellow paper by Karen Foster Design
Grape Soda paper by Karen Foster Design
Blue Hawaiian Shirt paper by Karen Foster Design
Green cardstock
White cardstock
Green grosgrain ribbon
Simply Chic Milan White alphabet stickers by American Crafts
Simply Chic Milan Color Set alphabet stickers by American Crafts
Kathy’s Leafy Letters Alphabet Rub-ons by Wordsworth
SEI alphabet stickers
Green glitter gel pen by American Crafts
Blue glitter gel pen by Pentel
Purple Zig Writer
Green and blue rhinestones
Silk flower
Large silver brad
8 small assorted brads
Blue ink pad by Fabrico

  1. First I printed the photograph as a 5” x 7” on HP Premium Glossy Photo Paper on my HP Photosmart 1115 printer.

  2. Next, mat the photograph with white cardstock, leaving a 1/8” border around the picture. Then mat the white cardstock on green cardstock and leave a ½” border around the picture. Ink the edges of the green photo mat with a blue inkpad.

  3. Cut a 1 ½” strip from both the Blue Hawaiian Shirt and Grape Soda patterned papers. Ink the edges of the patterned paper strips with the blue ink pad. Then cut a piece of green ribbon about 14” long. Lay the two strips of patterned paper and green ribbon at angles across the bottom half of the page and adhere them to the Wet Paint Yellow patterned paper background.

  4. Adhere the photograph to the top right corner of the background paper, leaving about a ¾” margin around the top and right side of the photo mat.

  5. Add a large silver brad to the center of the silk flower and poke a hole through the page at the bottom left corner of the photo mat. Insert the brad and attach the flower to the page.

  6. Add title sticker letters to the Grape Soda patterned paper strip, starting with the last letter and working your way back to the first letter. For the letters “r” and “e,” cut the outline of each letter from the sticker sheet and adhere only the outlines of the letters. Color the letters “e” and “r” with gel pens and add a corresponding rhinestone to each letter.

  7. Using a wooden stylus, rub on the letters for the word “marriage” using the Kathy’s Leafy Letters rub-ons. Start with the “m” right next to the “y” from “years” and work your way towards the end of the word.

  8. Add the SEI alphabet stickers to spell “of” on the tail of the “y” in “years.”

  9. Hand journal around the left corner of the photo mat, leaving space for brads between each phrase. Poke holes and add the assorted brads to draw attention to the journaling. Add the date to the bottom left corner of the page, and it’s complete!
