Brothers and Sisters: Step-by-Step

by Andrea Steed (Jul 28, 2005)

Rarely do I create a layout with only one photograph. When choosing photos for a layout, I typically look for one focal picture and add two supporting photos. That way I’m able to focus on my favorite photo, but still include others that I like as well.

This particular layout of my brothers and sisters is no exception. Here’s how you can copy this design.

Supply List
12” x 12” sheet of maroon cardstock (1)
12” x 12” sheet of turquoise blue cardstock (1)
8 ½” x 11” sheet of white cardstock (1)
12” x 12” sheet of Lazar StudioWERX Big Kahuna patterned paper (1)
“Brothers” script metal title from Pressed Petals
“Sisters” metal letters from Pressed Petals
QuicKutz “Sonja” ampersand die cut
White Galaxy Marker
White Ultimate Gel Pen

Choose Photo Placement: The first thing I do when starting a layout is to play with photo placement. Beginning with a basic photo placement plan helps me decide what type of papers and embellishments I’ll need to fill the rest of the page. These photos had an obvious focal photo--the photo of all four of us together. I cropped the other two photos into squares to remove excess background from the image and to create two smaller supporting photos. I wanted the focal point photo to be the first thing that was noticed, so I placed it above the other two, which I layered in the bottom right corner.

Select Colors and Papers: Now that I had a plan for the photo placement, I looked for papers that would complement the colors in the photographs. Since we were all wearing several different colors, I wanted to try and incorporate all of them in some way so that no one person stood out more than the others.

I chose a turquoise blue cardstock as the base for the page, and then selected a patterned paper from Lazar StudioWERX that would coordinate with the turquoise blue. It still needed one more color, so I added maroon and a little bit of white as accent colors to contrast with the blue.

Make Layers: Once I had chosen the colors and papers to use, I started creating layers of color to place behind the photographs. First I cut the patterned paper to an 11” x 11” square. Next, I cut the maroon cardstock to 11 ¼” x 11 ¼” to mat the patterned paper. Because both sheets of cardstock would be covered from the front of the layout, I removed the center of them to use as part of the photo mats for the focal point photograph. I removed a 10 ½” x 10 ½” square from the center of both the maroon and turquoise cardstock. This is a great way to stretch the use of your paper!

Next, I cut a large rectangle (about 8” x 6”) from the leftover turquoise cardstock and matted it with white cardstock. Finally, I matted the focal point photograph with a portion of the leftover maroon cardstock.

Once all of the pieces were cut, I began to lay them on top of each other and place all of the items where I wanted them to go. I placed the turquoise mat at an angle in the upper left corner to fill the space across from the supporting photographs. Then I placed the focal photograph in the top right corner of the mat, which happened to be the center of the page. I added the supporting photographs to the bottom right corner and layered them with each other and the large focal point mat to tie them all together. Once I was happy with the design, I began gluing all of the pieces together.

Add Embellishments, Titles and Journaling: Unless I have several paragraphs of journaling to write, I usually add journaling, titles, and embellishments last after everything else is glued down. I considered adding the journaling to the empty space below the focal photograph, but I only had a short sentence to write. Instead, I decided to add my title to that area and journal around the photograph. That allowed me to add a more dynamic title to the page with the Pressed Petals metal words and letters.

As final touches, I added the journaling, some pen markings around the outside border of the layouts and the QuicKutz ampersand.

I was very pleased with the final result.
