Step-by-Step: Three As

by Andrea Steed (Jan 29, 2007)

"A" names are quite popular in my family. My name is Andrea, my mom's name is Audrey, and my daughter's name is Ayla. It wasn't on purpose, but it's one of those quirky coincidences that connect me to my family and should definitely be recorded. I created this page to show that connection to my daughter.

Supplies:

Instructions:

To create a very simple page and keep as much focus as possible on the letter "A" and the photographs, I chose a plain white cardstock background and minimal embellishments.

I wanted to create a feeling of "sameness" with the three photographs of my mom, myself and Ayla. To do that, I chose baby photos of each of us sitting propped up in a chair. Then I converted them to black and white and printed them so that they were approximately the same size. Next, I cropped them each to about 3" x 3" and lined them up across the page. To create a slightly wider margin along the outside of the photographs, I cropped the center photo to 2 ½" x 3".

Once the photos were cropped and lined up horizontally along the top portion of the page, I rounded the edges of the two outside photographs to create a softer line.

Next I added the chipboard "A" just below the photographs using Mini Glue Dots.

To give the page some more distinct parameters and to add a little bit of pink to the page, I included a top and bottom border using the Paper Frills borders.

Next, to add a little bit of whimsy and sparkle, I added a random sprinkling of flower sequins. To adhere them to the page, I used Mini-Glue Dots. To draw extra attention to the "A," I shaped the sprinkling in a diagonal line going towards the "A" and then continued it above the photographs.

Finally, I added our names and birth years to label each photograph and highlighted them with a little bit of chalk using a cotton swab and the layout was complete.

Now we have a layout that not only shows each of us at a similar age, but also records the connection we have to the letter "A." Perhaps Ayla will carry on the tradition with her daughter.
