Step-by-Step: Snarly Gnarly Growl
Sometimes you don't have a photograph to portray the story that you want to remember. The case of the "Snarly Gnarly Growl" was one of those times! While camping up near Lake Superior this fall, we were terrified in the middle of the night by a horrifying growl coming from an animal just feet from our tent. We couldn't see it, but we could DEFINITELY hear it! It paralyzed us with fear, and is a story worth re-telling. To include the story in my scrapbook, I decided to create my own portrayal of what this animal might have looked like, by creating a paper-pieced embellishment. Supplies: - black cardstock
- yellow corrugated cardstock
- red cardstock
- white cardstock
- brown fibers by FibersbytheYard.com
- colored pencils
- Sakura of America White Glaze Pen
- Sakura of America Yellow Souffle Pen
- metal alpha stickers by Pressed Petals
- silver alpha stickers by Provo Craft
- alpha die cuts by Basic Grey
- Pop Dot adhesive
Instructions: - Free-hand draw two oval eyes on the yellow corrugated cardstock; top and bottom teeth on the white cardstock; a nose, slivers for eyes and a mouth on black cardstock; and a tongue on red cardstock and then cut each piece out.
- Glue the slivers to the yellow ovals to make eyes, and the teeth and tongue to the black mouth.
- Add details with colored pencils and chalks to create nostrils and yellowed teeth.
- Glue the eyes, nose and mouth to the right-hand side of the black 12" x 12" sheet of cardstock, leaving room for journaling and your title. Add the nose and mouth with a pop-dot adhesive for dimension.
- With a clear liquid adhesive, glue the brown and black fiber around the outlines of the nose and mouth and above the eyes to create eyebrows.
- Once the face is complete, you can add hairy details with colored pencils around the outside edges of the eyes, nose and mouth.
- Next add your title. Start with the largest letters first to position it across the mouth of the animal's face. In this example, I started by positioning the "w" in "growl" in the animal's mouth, and then added the other letters around it. Next I added the sticker letters above it to finish out the title.
- To give the large die-cut letters some additional dimension, I used metallic rubs along the right-hand side of each letter for shadowing.
- Finally, add the journaling around the title, using the words of the title as part of the writing.
A scary story to remember-and now it can be!
