Point it Out: Using Arrows as Embellishments

by Denise Gormish (Aug 10, 2005)

When I need direction, I look for signs and arrows. Arrows point out where to go and give me a sense of what direction is appropriate. In layouts, arrows can point the viewer’s attention to fine details or make something in the journaling or photograph clear. Arrows can also just be a fun addition to a layout.

There are several methods for creating arrows:

  • Using a pen, draw an arrow to point out something in your layout. An arrow can be drawn to a specific photograph, section of journaling, word or embellishment on your layout. In Lindsay Teague’s layout she used a hand-drawn arrow to connect her title and photograph together.

  • Custom make your own arrow by hand drawing an arrow on the backside of cardstock, and then cut it out. These arrows can be created in a variety of colors, textures, shapes and sizes.

  • Create an arrow by using an upside down “V” and the straight portion of a lowercase “i.” To make the arrow long, connect several sections of the lowercase “i” together.

  • Use your computer to print an arrow on a photograph. Open your photograph in a word processing program, then draw or insert an arrow in the appropriate place. Text can even be added to the photograph. Print out the photograph and place it on your layout.

Arrows can be implemented into your design in several ways. Here are a few ideas:

  • Use an arrow to point to a specific photograph, an embellishment or a section of journaling.

  • Use an arrow to point out something in a photograph. In Lindsay Teague’s layout she used a hand-cut arrow to point to the sky.

  • Use arrows as bullets for a list of items or points.

  • Use several arrows for an embellished border.

  • Use an arrow to create flow and direction from one section of the layout to the next. It provides direction for the viewer’s eye.

Next time you want to highlight something or add artistic flair to a layout, consider an arrow!
