Tilted and Curved

by Lindsay Teague (Jun 3, 2004)

Want to add some pizzazz to your plain pages? By tilting and curving the elements on your layouts, you can do just that. Simply creating a curved line out of a piece of patterned paper or tilting a photo mat will add just the "punch" you need to make you feel like you have created a true work of art!

Got Curves?

It seems that the curved line is becoming the new "it thing" in scrapbooking. It is popping up more and more frequently in pages by the hottest artists in the industry. It is amazing what a simple curve can add to a plain page. Here are a few ideas for you to try:

  • Break out that old corner rounder punch and add the soft lines to the edges of your photos for a hip and unique look! (Good thing you didn't throw it away)

  • Use a large dinner plate to trace the curved line onto the back of your patterned paper. Cut along the line you just made and adhere to your layout.

  • Use a circle punch (or the rim of a cup) to cut out circular shapes for the page. Use this as a fun and inexpensive way to embellish your layout. Try using different coordinating patterns of paper to add more appeal!
" Take a cup with a small rim (like a Dixie cup) and trace around the edge to get a larger curved edge than with your corner rounder! (See Example)

To Tilt or Not to Tilt…

Another good way to accent your pages and make them truly unique is by tilting certain elements of your pages. This is an oldie-but-goodie for many veteran scrappers, the "little black dress" of the scrapping world, if you will. By tilting a photo or a journaling mat, you are drawing the eye to that element. This way you are dictating what others see when they look at your pages. Don't be shy; try some of these techniques on your next layout:

  • Mount your photo on a piece of cardstock and tilt it just slightly inward or outward (whichever fits your design best).

  • Cut different patterns of paper into large strips and angle them slightly (overlapping if needed) and add your photos on top. This makes your background entirely new and unique.

  • Take a large piece of paper and lay it over your main piece of cardstock, tilt the paper on top just slightly and trim off the tips of the paper to fit the size you need. This can be a really neat look for a quick and simple background!

  • Try mounting your photo onto a photo mat at an angle, rather than lining them up straight. This technique is being used quite often right now!

There are endless amounts of ideas and tricks that can be used to spice up your layouts. Hopefully this article will get your creative juices flowing, and before you know it, you'll be cranking out totally new and fresh layouts with just a little tilt here and a big curve there!
