What's the Right Way to...?

by Andrea Steed (Aug 12, 2004)

People ask me "What's the right way to…?" questions about scrapbooking everyday. I guess since it's my job, it's assumed that I know the correct way to do each technique, how to organize albums and how to tell my story in journaling. Or perhaps it's because this weekly newsletter claims to have all the answers for how to scrapbook "correctly." We show you how to design, tell you how to journal, and challenge you to create certain types of pages.

While it's certainly flattering to think I have all the answers, the simple truth is scrapbooking is a very personal craft. Your design style choices, journaling techniques and comfort zone may be completely different than what others enjoy. And that's okay--it's great in fact! Since scrapbooking is a craft that tells a personal story, it makes sense that you should be reflected in the pages.

I encourage you to try different things until you find what works for you. There are so many choices in scrapbooking so there are plenty of opportunities to make your albums personal. We'll continue to give you ideas, challenges, and tips, but remember that it's you that gets to create your albums and make them yours.

So the next time you feel frustrated with a layout, think a technique is completely ridiculous and difficult, or want to crawl and hide when you feel like there are so many new products and ideas that you could never keep up--remember that scrapbooking is a personal choice. Your layouts don't have to look just like the ones in the magazines and your neighbor's pages don't have to look like your layouts. What makes scrapbooking special is that each person's album is different. It's unique to you and it serves an important purpose-to pass along your memories to future generations.
