5 Favorites from 5 Designers

by Rachel Myerson (Feb 16, 2009)

Do you ever ponder all the products in the world of scrapbooking and wonder, "What would someone else buy?" Of course, only you know what you really like best, but sometimes we don't trust our own judgment.  I asked several of my favorites here at Scrapjazz to name their five favorite products. Here's what they said:

1_239Noelfab is known for her great layouts as well as her blog and contests. Here's what she had to say: "Oh this is easy! I would have to go with American Crafts THICKERS!! THICKERS!! THICKERS!! And I love them because they really give your title, or keyword, the "punch" it deserves. And they come in so many varieties that they can really add a feeling to any project, be it simple, or special and sparkle-y!" She claims to use them in almost all of her layouts.  Here are a few that highlight them:

Layout: So Thankful for Love
Layout: Costume Party!

Rounding out her top five products are:

2_162Mary Eason (Mjbee) is my personal favorite here at Scrapjazz. I was very surprised with her top five.  Mary's top choice was the Crafter's Workshop templates. She says, "These templates are fun and versatile. They can be used with many mediums including chalks, inks or paints and can be used as guides for brads or other embellishments. The template I use most often is the 12x12 Dots All Around. I like the variety of templates available and that they are perfectly sized for layouts and cards."

Rounding out Mary's top five are:

  • Cuttlebug - She uses this little machine quite often, especially when making cards. The Cuttlebug is fast and simple, a manual machine that requires no programming, sticky mats or electrical outlets. The embossing folders and dies available for use with the Cuttlebug are quite extensive. Dies from other manufacturers can easily be used with this machine too. The combination of embossing and cutting can't be beat!
  • ATG Adhesive Gun - Despite its bulky size, she likes how strong the adhesive is and how long a roll of it lasts. It is so lightweight that you forget about its size when using it.
  • Large Scor-It - Mary writes, "The Scor-It is the perfect tool for card making. I love the perfect folds I get each and every time. I also use it to emboss lines as accents on cards and on layouts as large as 12"x12". If you're looking for a tool to make accordion folds, this is the one. The Scor-It comes in a mini size that would be perfect if you're interested in using it for cardmaking or smaller projects only."
  • Stickles - Stickles are fun to use when you want to add some shimmer and sparkle to your crafting projects. Mary uses them on many of her cards and layouts. She uses them to accent patterned paper, color in stamped images, outline, create shapes, swirls and to add dots of sparkle. The fine tip allows for very detailed work. There is no limit to the way these little sparklers can be used.

3_132The next person I asked was Sheredian, one of the many talented members of the Blue Crew. Her favorite products are her scallop and circle punches. Here are a few of her layouts using punches:

Layout: It's All About the Boo
Layout: Just an Ordinary Day
Layout: Fun
Layout: Ice Cream
Layout: Beach Bums

Rounding out Sheredian's top products are:

Sheredian also mentioned that she can't live without her Bazzill cardstock!

4_112Another favorite here at Scrapjazz is the founder, Andrea Steed. Andrea's five favorite products are:

  • Fiskars 12" Trimmer - Andrea has an older version of this trimmer, but feels that it has served her well during her eight years of scrapbooking!  She writes, "I know it so well I can whip out trimmed pieces in a flash, without even thinking about it!"

I'm sure she uses it in most of her layouts, but here's one example: Little Fashionista.

  • Sakura of America Micron 6-piece black ink set - Andrea has found these to be fantastic journaling and doodling pens.  There are six different thicknesses, which seem to fit her every need, from drawing thick borders to tiny printed journaling.

    Layout: April Antics

  • Fiskars Softouch 5" Micro-Tip Scissors - These super-sharp scissors are perfect for getting into tiny curves and crevices, snipping off lose edges of paper, or trimming ribbon.  She loves the spring-action handle and the locking mechanism.

Andres used these scissors to cut the title in this layout: Moonlit Stroll

  • UHU Color Glue Stick - .74 oz - Although Andrea uses a wide variety of adhesives, she always come back to the plain old regular glue stick.  It's cheap, easy, and you can often buy it in bulk.  She uses glue sticks anytime she's gluing paper to paper or photographs to paper.

    Layout: Hike

  • American Crafts Alphabet Stickers - Like many scrappers, Andrea claims to be addicted to alphabet stickers; they're so easy and versatile.  Her favorite brand is American Crafts. They have such a wide variety of styles, sizes, textures, colors and fonts, all of which seem to mesh well with her scrapbooking style.  Their alphabet rub-ons are great too!

Here is a layout from Andrea that uses them: Boat Trip

5_74After asking all of these favorites about their favorite products, I started to think about my favorite products too. Since my favorite technique is stamping, several of my favorite products relate to stamping.

  • Nick Bantock Inks - I have bought many brands of ink, and have found that Nick Bantock Inks provide the best stamped image. It dries quickly which is perfect if I want to color inside the image. I used the brown to stamp the images in this layout which also uses my next two favorite products:

  • Fancy Pants Design Pollen Dust Stamps - If I could only own one stamp set, it would definitely be this one. With flourishes, stems, and flowers, this stamp set has a lot of flexibility.

  • Technique Tuesday Provence Lower Case clear stamps - Technique Tuesday is one of my favorite brands of acrylic stamps. The images always stamp clearly and they come in attractive shapes. However, the Provence alphabet, with the elegant details in the letters, is definitely my favorite.

  • Bo Bunny Patterned Paper - Although I like to use patterned papers from an assortment of companies, I think Bo Bunny is the one I turn to most often. I especially like the Futbol Soccer and the Winter Whispers collections.

  • Bazzill Basics 12 x 12 White Cardstock (Textured) - It is the most basic of all scrapbook supplies, but I couldn't live without my plain white cardstock.

I hope this list of favorites has given you some ideas. I know that it has certainly gotten me excited to try some products that I never would have otherwise considered.
