Acrylic Album Adhesives
Acrylic albums provide a beautiful way to add depth to your scrapbook projects. Whether you add acrylic front and back covers or do an entire album with acrylic, the question of how to adhere paper and embellishments becomes important. There are several possibilities to choose. Here are a few: Adhering Paper and Other Flat Items Spray adhesives work very well for all flat items such as paper, transparencies and vellum. To use a spray for paper (or any flat, smooth item), spray the paper then press the sprayed side of the item firmly on to the acrylic. Use a brayer or bone folder to create a firm, smooth bond. - A Xyron Machine works by covering one side of the paper or flat item totally with adhesive. To use a Xyron, feed the item into the machine and turn the handle. It will come out of the machine with a firm, even layer of adhesive attached to the paper. Remove the protective coating paper and press the item on to the acrylic. Use a brayer or bone folder to create a firm, smooth bond.
Adhering Embellishments Glue Dots provide a wide variety of sizes for adhering embellishments. They work especially well with small items like brads and jewels. They can also be rolled and used effectively behind chipboard, foam or felt words. Glue Dots will adhere well, but will show through on the other side. - Glue tape such as Terrifically Tacky gives a strong bond to larger-sized embellishments. Like Glue Dots, glue tape will show through on the other side. To get it to show less use a brayer or bone folder on the tape to flatten it out before removing the red tape and adhering it.
- ZIG Glue or KI Gloo can adhere embellishments as well.
- Diamond Glaze works well to adhere glitter, small areas of vellum and beads.
When adhering any item to acrylic you should be especially careful not to get adhesive on the acrylic where you will not be adhering anything. It will stain the acrylic and is very hard to remove. Self-Adhesive Items One way to avoid the issues of adhesive is to use self-adhesive items. Stickers and rub-ons generally will adhere well to an acrylic album. Rub-on images (not words) look particularly nice because the image will appear on both sides of the acrylic. Hiding Adhesive While people who are particular about not having the adhesive show through may have a hard time, the adhesives can be hidden in many ways. Try these: - Use paper underneath your smaller items.
- Layer items on the reverse side to cover the adhesive.
- Cover the adhesive on the reverse side with a rub-on.
- If only the front and back covers are acrylic, clip or otherwise attach the first page to the acrylic page.
- Alternatively, add all your embellishments to the first non-acrylic page except for the items that are self-adhesive.
With adhesive issues in hand have fun creating your acrylic album.
