Inspired by Fashion

by Lindsay Teague (Aug 8, 2005)

When it comes to fashion, we know that white shoes are only acceptable between Memorial Day and Labor Day…right? Not that we all listen, because my white flip-flops are appropriate at any time here in Arizona. There are certain rules of fashion that we all follow to some extent and trends are constantly evolving and changing. The same is true in the scrapbook industry, maybe even more so. Since the scrapbook industry is a smaller community than the fashion industry, we’re more aware of what’s “in” and what’s “out.”

It seems that in the blink of an eye your favorite embellishment has become a thing of the past. Looking at the trends in scrapbooking, it’s amazing that they seem to follow the lead of the fashion industry, if you will. Do you want to be on top of the latest trends in scrapbooking? Here are some of the latest fashion trends that scrapbooking is slowly leaning towards:

  • Polka Dots are back, and in a big way. I can see the spotted paper popping up all over the place. Companies like 7gypsies, KI Memories, Melissa Frances, Scenic Route, and Autumn Leaves have already jumped on the bandwagon by producing beautifully colored polka-dotted papers and embellishments.

  • The Distressed Look is huge again this year. What would you do without that favorite pair of jeans with the hole in them? Now you can buy them that way, and the same goes with your scrapbook products. Companies like BasicGrey, Bo-Bunny, Gin-X, Christina Cole and Rusty Pickle all have pre-distressed scrapbook products for you to pick up, sans sandpaper!

  • Lace will be making quite a statement in the fashion world this year, and I think we’ll see it popping up more and more in the pages of the scrapbook magazines. Ribbon companies have caught on and are offering scrapbook lace to accompany your pictures.

  • Grosgrain Ribbon is making a comeback in those belts from the past. Now you can wear it and use it in your scrapbook pages. May Arts has some great colors and patterns for you to choose from in a variety of sizes, but companies like Li’l Davis and Making Memories are jumping on the bandwagon as well.

  • Layering has never been hotter in the fashion industry. Putting on a million different layers isn’t really effective in the summer, but you can bet that it’s still being done. The same goes for scrapbook pages of late. Layering is easy to do and adds a lot to a page.

  • Jewels seem to always rank high in the fashion scene, but this year is all about the bling! You can see it on everyone from “the girl next door” in Tiffany to the rapper with the biggest diamond-encrusted cross in history. On your scrapbook pages, “a little dab will do ya”. A few pieces of sparkle will add a lot to that page that is lacking that certain something. You can purchase Swarovski flatbacks at your local bead store, or get your hands on some of the Heidi Swapp jewels that come with adhesive already on them.

Now you have a real excuse to watch those guilty pleasure shows on E! Network. Make sure you take note of what you see on the red carpet and be on the lookout for how that impacts the scrapbook industry.
