December 2009 Sketch Challenge

by Rachel Myerson (Dec 1, 2009)

December is a month for making and sending cards, so this month's sketch is for a card.  I have been experimenting with card shapes other than rectangles and squares, and chose to make this month's sketch an oval. I asked several designers to interpret the sketch. Here are the cards they created.

Mary Eason made two beautiful cards from the sketch. Her first card followed the sketch closely, but split the center oval into two sections separated by a piece of rickrack. She beautifully colored a stamp for her image. In Mary's second card, she rotated the oval horizontally. She also added extra interest to the shape by scalloping the outer edge.

Kelly Rumbol used two patterned papers with a raised image on her charming oval card. She added three flowers for extra interest.

Rosey Dimond interpreted the sketch differently by mounting the oval onto a rectangular card.  She added a charm under the ribbon on this lovely card.

One thing I like about an oval card is that it is possible to attach the front to the back by something other than a fold. On my card, I tied the two ovals together with a ribbon.  The front and back can also be attached with brads, eyelets, or snaps.

I hope you have fun using this sketch to make your own oval cards. Experiment with different types of images and ways to attach the front and back of the card. Have fun and make sure you share your results here in the gallery at Scrapjazz.
