July 2009 Sketch Challenge

by Maegan Hall (Jul 1, 2009)

1_318Rather than take my normal approach to 4th of July sketches, I decided to make a sketch that really highlighted a favorite photo with room for journaling.

Sharon, aka Kiwifarmer, used my sketch for another major holiday, Christmas. I love how she kept the stars on the sketch and paired it with gorgeous elegant papers. She moved her title underneath her main photo and doubled that space for journaling too. A sweet bird completes the layout.

Lori, aka Legacy, took my sketch to a whole new level. I LOVE how she changed it up and the techniques she used. She used layers of Maya Mist and her title is made using Fabric Thickers, which she stamped and inked. Her main photo was edited in Adobe and printed on colored cardstock. It is also misted to give a great effect. Rather than have a blocked background with several borders as I drew in the sketch, she clustered her elements together for a warm and detailed feel. Her title, "Shine," seems to perfectly complement the glamour of this layout.

Beth, aka Drama Mamas Mama, kept the focus on her photo by using a larger size and minimizing the products on her layout, "Winter Wonderland." Gorgeous snowflakes replace the stars and she used the space underneath her photo for a fabulous horizontal ribbon border, rather than on the right-hand side of the layout. Even though she only used one sheet of paper (instead of blocking the background) her ribbon gives the illusion of a blocked background and frames her photo perfectly. Her use of cool colored products makes it feel cold and wintery.

Sheredian impressed me as usual with her take on my sketch. Positioning her main photo to the left of the large circle and star really leads my eyes to those beautiful borders she created. Her photo placement left an empty space on her layout that perfectly fits her title, "My Shero." Since she repositioned her title, Sheredian had plenty of room for her heartfelt journaling. Her pink and brown product choices seem to have been made to highlight her mother. What a way to honor somebody!

For my layout entitled, "Awe," I highlighted the look of amazement and excitement on my daughter's face and covered up a distracting background with my stars. Three tiny fireworks photos line the bottom of my horizontal photo and leave a perfect amount of space for my journaling. I opted to put my title at the top of my layout, like some of the other women. My stars were cut from glitter paper to add a little sparkle, like fireworks.

I hope you enjoy this sketch as much as we have. As you can see, it can be changed, flipped or altered to fit your own special photos.
