Retro Design Inspiration: 1960s

The 1960s were a time of great change in the world. Youth dominated the culture, and was the major influencer of fashion, music, home décor, and entertainment. Style-wise the nation was moving away from the conservative cottage shades popular in the 50s and showing more appreciation for the colors found in nature. Greens, golds, oranges, and all shades of yellow were popular in everything from clothing to cars, shag carpeting to shoes. Metal elements were frequently made in copper; however, Lucite and colored plastics were much hotter in the design world. Popular design elements such as Siamese cats, roosters, daisies, mushrooms, and owls could be found everywhere. These three projects are all inspired by the colors, themes, and materials popular in the 1960s. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed creating them. I may not have been alive during this dynamic era - but I was certainly inspired by those who were. Crazy Daisy Notebooks These fun little notebooks were inspired by the patterned paper that has a very 1960s feel to it. Simply wrap a store-bought notebook with patterned papers of your choice and embellish. These are a great gift for teachers or coworkers.

Funky Chic This is my daughter during Halloween. How could I not be inspired by the colors of the 1960s when she went trick or treating in this bright Hippy Girl Costume? Those oranges and lime green shades are perfect for this photo.

Altered Box This box was designed for a friend's kitchen. It started off as a plain chipboard box from my local craft store. The avocado color and rooster theme is very reminiscent of what you might find in the 60s. The miscellaneous buttons add to the handmade feel.
