Clothing Tag Inspiration

by Tiffany Roberts (Jan 8, 2009)

I've found a wonderful source of inspiration I want to share with you - clothing tags! Those often-overlooked tags from the items we buy every day are designed to be eye-catching and interesting. I've recently noticed that they are like little ATC's or mini-layouts sometimes.

I've started collecting the labels and tags that I really like. I have an assortment of them that I've added to my inspiration notebook. Some of them caught my eye because of the color combinations, others because of a logo, font, or texture. I like to put these into my notebook with a simple sketch or some quick notes about how I could incorporate this look into a scrapbook layout or card.

Here are a few projects I recently completed that were inspired by clothing tags. On this first layout I was inspired by the concentric circles in a monochromatic color grouping. I used that same idea for the journaling area on this Disney-themed layout.

Supplies:

  • cardstock - Paper Accents
  • patterned paper - (green swirl) KI Memories, (green stripe) Doodlebug Designs, (Green circles) Cosmo Cricket
  • "Together" tag - Heidi Swapp
  • "Goofy" sticker - EK Success
  • ABC letters - Reminisce
  • paper ribbon trim - Flair Designs
  • black journaling pen - Martha Stewart

I really like the distressed texture and muted colors on this tag. This covered notebook was inspired by those weathered features.

Supplies:

  • patterned paper - (dots and floral) Melissa Frances, (brown texture) Paper Loft
  • ribbon - Offray
  • "Together" label - Wild Asparagus, EK Success
  • "Friends" rub-on - Me and My Big Ideas
  • adhesive - Xyron 900 Permanent

This last project took its color cues from this cute children's apparel tag. I love the combination of deep blue, red, and a softer blue.

  • paper flower - Bazzill

Inspiration can be found all around us. We just have to look at everyday items in a new light. I hope you'll take a peek at those clothing tags, shoe boxes, and other packaging sources before you toss it out next time. I think you'll be surprised at how easily you can adapt the elements you see into your own work.
