Imagine That!
Do you ever get all your pictures spread out in front of you and have no idea what you want to do with them? Or you have a cute title and embellishment and are stumped with how to lay them out attractively? All you need to do is look at the world around you to find some great inspiration! Titles or Quotes Spot a neat advertisement slogan, or a greeting on a card? Catch a phrase on a bumper sticker or slang on a children's television show? All of these have potential as title inspiration! Title ideas can be just the words, or actually copying the whole typeset look. In addition to phrases, great quotes and poems for your scrapbook pages are everywhere. Sayings and lyrics from music, theater, favorite authors and children's artworks are other good places to look for title inspiration. Color Combinations Although our layout colors are typically selected from our photos, interesting color combinations can be found all around you. I would typically not put red and brown together, but loved the combination on a gallery print, and knew that those two colors would work for a layout. Paint swatches from the hardware store are a fun way to see new color combinations and to break out of a color rut. Clothing and other textiles are perfect for color inspiration (unless you are like me and wear mostly neutrals). Mother Nature herself gives us beautiful color combinations, such as the beautiful shades in a sunset. Page Composition Graphic designers and artists get paid big bucks to make advertisements, brochures and art prints that are attractive and grab the viewer's attention. Sometimes you can pull just the composition of page elements from an advertisement or sign and make it work on a scrapbook layout. A headline becomes your title, a graphic becomes your embellishment or photo and ad copy becomes your journaling! Embellishments This is the area in which you can most commonly find ideas for your page. Many of the graphic items you see in books, home decor, stationary and other places lend themselves to tag art and paper piecing. It is easy to recreate these things with your scrapbook tools, using a scanner, copier or tracing paper! Borders Recreate wallpaper borders, greeting card borders, edges on linens and much more. If it has an edge... it has some type of border. Many ads have edge art or borders than can be used in a scrapbook layout! Let your eyes roam away from the center of an item, and you will usually find terrific border inspiration. Photo Mats Picture frames are essentially the same as a photo mat. Ever wander down the picture frame aisle at Target, looking for a great frame for a favorite photo? A photo mat on your scrapbook layout serves the exact same purpose as a photo frame. Where to find ideas? Magazines Billboards Advertisements Clothing Home decor Travel Literature Photo Frames Catalogs Child Care Center/Schools Store Signage Household Products (Kleenex boxes, napkins, food packaging) Children's Toys Linens Craft Shows Music Television Shows Internet Gift-wrap Greeting Cards Architecture Books Mother Nature Company logos Paint swatches Sales tags Furniture Coloring Books Christmas Ornaments Stained Glass Wherever you go, whatever you are doing, keep a notepad and pen handy because you never know when you might see or hear something that would be beautiful on a scrapbook page. Once you learn to open your eyes to the possibilities, you will be amazed at how fast the ideas pour in! Take a look at the Everyday Inspirations gallery for examples of layouts inspired by all of the things around us.
