September 2008 Sketch Challenge

by Lisa Carroll (Sep 1, 2008)

This month I created a sketch with a 4" x 6" horizontal photo, a journaling block and a split title. To spice it up a bit I added several circle embellishments around the core of the layout. I love this sketch because it can be very simple with just a few added embellishments, or it could be very detailed with lots of embellishments. Here are four examples of different ways to interpret the sketch.

My first layout precisely follows the sketch. As you can see, what appears to be a simple layout becomes much more detailed with all the circles, flowers and buttons added. The photo and journaling block are also tilted for some added interest.

For my second layout I wanted to keep things a little simpler and also include an additional photo. So I cropped the pictures to a smaller size and only used three large circle embellishments. I topped it off with some buttons for a little more visual interest.

April Ordonez

April created a digital layout using the sketch. She did a great job using the block of circles as a foundation for the photo. She also moved the title to the bottom right-hand corner, and placed the journaling in the circles. I love her color choices and the way everything pops right off the page with the black background.

Jennifer Gensel

Jennifer used a vertical photo and moved the journaling block further off to the right. Instead of using circles, she chose a detailed patterned paper with lots of flowers that she further embellished with more flowers and buttons. I also love how she framed the photo with her title.

As you can see, there are many different options with this sketch. I hope you find my sketch inspiring and have fun creating with it!
