August 2008 Sketch Challenge

by Julia Sandvoss (Aug 1, 2008)

I'll confess, I love to work with sketches of all kinds. With so many amazing products to choose from it's nice to have one element of the layout done for you. And even better if you are a card maker, layout sketches work for those too.

For this month's sketch I created a clean, open-space layout that leaves many possibilities for interpretation. You can follow it exactly or add some touches to it to make it yours! It has a single 5" by 7" photo space, wide paper strips and a title and journaling to the right.

I asked Abby (Scrappy Abby), Delaina (Sewscrapsleep), Jordan (JordanRadio), Janice (Janice N), Nancy (NancyK) and Marielle (Marilou64) to join me in creating a layout with this sketch. Here's a great sampling of layouts from some very talented ladies!

Abby's "Dive" layout is about more than what you first think, and I love that! Not only is the layout beautiful, the rhinestone circle around the photo is a great way to draw your eye to the photo. Abby chose beautiful colors and embellishments and also meaningful journaling.

Delaina's "Cherish" layout really grabs your eye with Scenic Route's colorful Loveland papers. The added hand-drawn accents add a really unique touch to the fun papers and showcase a great photo!!

Jordan's "Playful" layout, a bright, colorful page about her friends, wowed me. She used Love , Elsie's hip print papers and embellishments to make for the perfect page to celebrate her good friends.

Janice's layout, "Rock Star," uses the new Scenic Route Liberty line. What I love is that Janice shows that a 4th of July style paper is perfect for a variety of scrapook topics, and this one is perfect for it.

Nancy's "We're Gonna Be Friends" layout first caught my eye through the colors she chose, so beautiful with the greens, blues and pinks! Her layout maintains the photo and paper strip elements with a horizontal ribbon border. She added a beautiful title down the side of the page and balances off her page with the white journaling and flower.

Marielle was sweet and made two beautiful layouts, each based off the sketch and yet so different. Her first layout, "New Bike," has such great colors and details. Notice the star brads on the right side (love this). She set the layout on a horizontal scale and kept a similar feel to the original sketch with her title placement and paper strips. She added fun journal strips to finish it off.

Her second layout, "Beach Boy," is too fun and uses one of my favorite lines, Bo Bunny's Beachy Keen! Her wonderful beach photo goes perfectly with the papers. The layout shifts the title to the top right side but the layout has balance with the fun beach cutouts from the print paper. Little detail stitching is the perfect complement.

Finally for my layout I used Making Memories new Noteworthy line and kept to the sketch using print papers for the vertical element. I extended papers out to the right of the photo, added some pretty flower embellishments and created a fun title with some added journaling.

I hope all these amazing layouts offer you inspiration to get out some fun pictures and supplies and join us in creating this month's sketch. Drop me a note and let me see what you have made!
