May 2008 Sketch Challenge

by Lisa Carroll (May 1, 2008)

With summer quickly approaching I thought it would be great to create a versatile sketch that had a lot of spaces for photos. Since this sketch is very linear and fairly simple, it offers a lot of options and variations. I asked five designers to work with the sketch, and interpret it as they see fit.

I used the sketch exactly as it was created and have included six photos of varying sizes. I used the long narrow strip as my journaling block and filled in the rest of the page with different patterned papers and embellishments.

Amanda Stanford
Amanda loves to have a lot of white space on her layouts, so my sketch presented a challenge to her. She decided to condense the sketch and squeeze all the elements together. I think it turned out wonderfully. I also love the cute frame she used to highlight her focal point.

Phoebe Wilson
Phoebe created a digital layout using the sketch. Like mine she used all the main blocks for pictures and ended up with six on the layout. I love how she added a flower behind the circle picture and chose to add jewels as borders on the top and bottom of the layout. It frames everything beautifully.

Jessica Ripley
Jessica switched out one of the larger photos with patterned paper, and used it as a background for her journaling strips. She also used a variety of embellishments to create a visual triangle and stretched her title across the page. I love the beautiful fall colors she used.

Gail Conner
Gail used five photos on her layout and used the circle for part of her title. I love how she added the two squares in the upper left-hand corner, and the Easter accents work wonderfully on the layout. She also chose to mat all the photos with polka dot papers.

Becky Williams
Becky used four photos, and replaced one of the small squares with another piece of patterned paper. She also stretched out her title to go across both the top and bottom of the layout. The journaling placement is a great addition to the layout.

As you can see, there are many different options with this sketch. You can use all the blocks for pictures, or mix it up and include a few pictures with more patterned paper. You can also replace a picture with journaling and use all sorts of embellishments to create a visual triangle around your layout. I hope you find my sketch inspiring and have fun creating with it!
