April 2008 Sketch Challenge

by Maegan Hall (Apr 1, 2008)

Ah, spring! Is it cabin fever or warm weather that causes us scrapbookers to go out every spring and take way too many photos? This sketch was designed to fit a lot of photos without using two pages.

Andrea Steed flipped the sketch to the left and created a page which sums up her New Years Eve evening. She journaled inside the tiny circle and moved her title to be on top of the pattern paper rectangle. I love the photo of her and her husband as her focal point. The larger photos allow her to fit a group photo and emphasize her daughter while the smaller photos are cropped to draw attention to other guests. All the photos support the title "New Years Eve."

Jennifer Sizemore kept the photo composition the same, but changed the paper placing all around in her layout, "Easter 05"! It's hard to tell that the layout came from the sketch. Jennifer journaled at the bottom of the layout. Since I didn't sketch a place for journaling, it's cool to see where the artists chose to journal. The title and focal photo switched places and Jennifer opted to embellish all over as opposed to one spot. Instead of a busy patterned paper rectangle behind her focal photo, she used a solid blue cardstock and had fun with her title.

For my first "Ride" layout, I kept my layout close to the sketch. I chose a flower as my embellishment and I had my title overlap my patterned paper rectangle. I journaled on the outside of the sketch, kind of like Sizemore did, but off to the side, rather than underneath my photos. Those tiny cropped photos were perfect for the photos I took of my daughter from far away.

For the boy version of "Ride" I flipped my sketch upside down. I kept my title in its original spot and chose large breeze-like swirls as my embellishments. They're not really embellishments though, just free-handed cardstock swirls. I kept details to a minimum for this all-boy layout, and I journaled briefly at the bottom of my swirls.

For my Halloween card, I kept my composition the same as the sketch, but I omitted an element up top with the title. Even a button just didn't look right to me. So, I kept it clean and simple.

What are some ways that we were alike in our projects? Jen and I kept our journaling on the edge of our paper. We all kept the same amount of photographs. But, how about our differences? Andrea took my circle embellishment literally, whereas Sizemore and I used it as a reference to add any embellishments. Andrea actually used her circle for journaling. It's April now; hopefully you've printed your Easter pictures and can use this sketch to fit several "hunt" photos. Be sure to link your layout in the challenge forum.
