February 2008 Sketch Challenge
It's February and love is in the air. I LOVE this sketch. Why? Because it's so light and "air-y." For this layout, Jennifer Sizemore took a literal approach to the sketch, keeping most of the weight to the right side of the layout. She changed my four boxes into three: a photo, a journaling box, and a decorative block. She chose the monogram "J" on a decorative circle for her embellishment with a tiny rub-on for her title. She added ribbon and flower embellishments to the top and bottom right corners to create a visual triangle. Painted chipboard completes the layout! Tilt my sketch 90 degrees to the right and you've got Sheredian Vickers' composition! Doesn't it look great with vertical elements? Like Jennifer, she changed my four blocks to three, but she added an additional photograph. She took my linear photo and paper placement and shook it up a bit by tilting her photographs and journaling block. A heart chipboard embellishment tops her cardstock swirl, while the title is changed to rest on the top of a photograph. Sheredian took her white and open layout and closed it in with matching red acrylic paint. It's just what the layout needed to frame in those precious photographs. Ramona Greenspan converted my 12" x 12" sketch to 8.5" x 11" effortlessly. Like the other contributors, she changed my four blocks to three. She also omitted the title and instead used the journaling block for a title and journaled on the outside of the box. Ramona took my horizontal swirl and made it a vertical flower with sprays of leaves. Rhinestone bling added some pop to her simple scheme. I based my sketch on this layout, so it copies the sketch exactly. I love the warm, quilt-like feel of multiple patterned papers, although the white space lets the papers breathe. This layout is easy on the eyes. I didn't want my journaling to be the focus, so I journaled directly on a busy plaid patterned paper. To balance out the linear "KICK" title, I placed a typed-letters paper at the bottom. I closed in the white space with a penciled-in frame. I also converted my one-page layout to two pages. Tilt my sketch 90 degrees left and that's how I arranged my photographs and boxes. I changed my four boxes to six: four photos, one journaling block, and a patterned paper block. I changed my title and put it on top of the photo strip, but kept my embellishment as a flower and my swirls coming off the flower. My swirls are watercolor paints. I had fun just playing with this layout. I kept my journaling directly on my patterned paper in the box on the right. Notice how four of the layouts have a white or beige background? How about the fact that everyone but me omitted a block? What's your take on this sketch? I'd love to see it. You might also want to try pulling out some watercolor paints. I know I'll be using them again... so fun!
