Inspired by Book Covers
Books fall open, you fall in, but wait a minute, did you notice that cover? The most powerful marketing tool for an author is the book cover. People notice and buy books because of their cover design. The final product has already surmounted many a graphic design challenge and while we as scrapbookers don't want our pages to look exactly like the book cover we admire, these covers often evoke just the feeling we want on our pages. We can turn our admiration into imitation by choosing an aspect of the cover and making it our own. Inspiring Book Cover Features - Color combinations

Virginia Hertel found inspiration in the cover of A Book of Angels by Sophie Burnham. The theme of the book as well as its design matched perfectly with the "angelic pose" of her daughter. Jael Cavillo found the clever title and the bright color of this children's book, Pinkalicious by Victoria and Elizabeth Kann, to be the exact choice for the photo she wanted to feature. Rachael Ray's cookbook, just in time!, also inspired Jael with its color combination and title typeface. Jael's layout "Dream Car (one day soon)" invokes the same feeling of carefree happiness as the Rachael Ray cover. Dawn Harnett chose The Night Before Christmas by Will Moses to convey her own Christmas story, using the same title. The circular format was skillfully transferred from the cover to her page. Chris Williams layout "Enjoy" was inspired by Activating the Desire to Learn by Bob Sullo. She very cleverly substituted her photos for the drawing of the children. The Barefoot Home by Marc Vassallo provided Chris Williams with another fabulous idea for the pirate photos of her daughter. The classic design of the book cover was easily and creatively imitated. Since you can "judge a book by its cover," children's picture books, paperback novels, textbooks, cookbooks, older used books and the latest best-sellers all provide eye-catching designs for our pages. Wander through your local bookstore, library or online at Amazon and discover what it is about certain book covers that appeal to you. With that knowledge you can create pages that will be judged "Fabulous"!
