December 2007 Sketch Challenge
This month's sketch combines two of my favorite elements: circles and groups of three. This sketch is a simple one, and I prefer that kind over complex, very detailed sketches because there is lots of room for personalization. As you can see this sketch was created with 12" x 12" sizing in mind. However I was easily able to alter this to create this 8" x 8" layout, entitled "Minnie Mouse," by placing the title on the full length of the layout and using smaller corner accent pieces. I was also able to use the same sketch as inspiration for the front of this square card. Don't forget about your sketches when it comes to crafting cards, tags, and other gift projects. By simply removing elements or resizing you can take a sketch you love and repurpose it over and over again. The square elements are not photos, but rather my favorite patterned papers. Laura Linda Rudy used the sketch on this lovely 8.5" x 11" layout, "Beauty." Instead of a photo she used a large flower for the round piece, and put journaling information in the small blocks on the lower right. Anne Clingenpeel was able to use this layout for her lovely flower photos. She altered the placement of the title to take advantage of negative space on her page. Here are two layouts I created. While they are both similar, you can see that I achieved a slightly different look on my "Fishtastic Friends" page by flipping the sketch and placing my three photos in a vertical line rather than the original triangular configuration. Also, I was lacking a long, vertical photo to use. To keep the shapes similar to those in the sketch I printed my journaling out on the computer and then placed a square photo above that. Pam Vogt used the sketch to create this Halloween layout about her dog's Halloween costume. She altered it slightly by using a larger photo and then two smaller squares to hold journaling. She placed her title inside a box, and accented the layout with old stickers found in her stash of supplies. Isn't that great? When using a sketch as your starting point be sure to look at those older supplies and see if there is anything that will fit the dimensions you need. We all have supplies sitting around that we haven't found a use for in ages, and it feels great to use those things up! The final layout I would like to share with you was inspired by the sketch, but altered a bit more than the others. I love that you can use a sketch as a starting point and then let your own creativity take over and end up with something very unique and personal. Many of the base elements are the same, including a group of three accents, circles, and both a horizontal and vertical photo grouping. Thanks for taking a peek at my sketch. I hope that it inspires you and that you'll try your hand at working with this sketch and others that can be found on Scrapjazz.com.
