November 2007 Card Sketch Challenge
Sketches have been a constant staple in the scrapbooking world. It seems everywhere you look there's a sketch to get you started on your layouts. What about cards? Cardmaking is a wonderful spin-off from our scrapbooking hobby. After all we have the necessary supplies to make them! Sometimes a sketch is just what you need to get a jump start on a card! I chose a fantastic card sketch by sketch extraordinaire, Becky Fleck. Becky is known for her amazing layout and card sketches known as PageMaps. You can see Becky's work at PageMaps Sketches. Here's the card sketch we worked with. It has a single border strip running through the center with a sentiment and embellishment. There's a scallop border around the edges. This card sketch can work for A2 size cards as well as 5" by 7". I asked fellow Blue Crew Designers; Nora Noll, Sheredian Vickers, Ramona Greenspan, Polly McMillan and Kristi Mangan to join me in creating a card with this sketch. So here's a great sampling of cards from some very talented ladies! Nora's card is oh-so-fun and very eye-catching. She layered papers but kept a clean edge instead of a scalloped edge. The arrow is the center border packing a powerful punch and grabbing your eye. She added a present with the sentiment below. Sheredian wowed me and made not one but three cards from the sketch. I think she liked it! The biggest wow is that she turned the sketch on its side. This is still the same sketch but now horizontal instead of vertical. The small changes on each card make them all look different. You wouldn't necessarily know she used the same sketch as the basis for all three. Each one has its own personality, and they're all great! Right away I noticed the ticket border that Polly used for the center. What a clever and fun element to add! She used gingham ribbons to create an edge effect and a fun printed sentiment. The circle tag is the perfect finish to a fun birthday card. Ramona made a beautiful card using the new BasicGrey Mellow line. The card follows the sketch, but Ramona added rounded corners to her paper. Fun buttons accent the sentiment. A flower grabs your eye and adds a punch of color. Kristi used a great color combination on her card. She added a bit of a scalloped edge to her card. She positioned her border strip closer to the middle instead of along the edge of the card. She added a print paper for her center border and a stamped sentiment. The flower is the perfect finish for a fun card to send to a friend. For my card I too turned the sketch on its side and worked with it horizontally. I placed the sentiment at the bottom of the border strip. I balanced the card by adding a sun cutout above. I kept with the scalloped edge border true to the original sketch.
