Scrapbook Magazine Review
by Julia Sandvoss
(Nov 8, 2007)
How nice would it be to have a review of the current scrapbook magazines on the market before you commit to a subscription? Many a time I have eagerly subscribed to a magazine just because I liked the cover, (true confession) only to receive it and realize that it's a magazine for plumbers or about drag racing. Well, look no further! Here is a review of the seven scrapbook magazines currently available for subscription. Creating Keepsakes - www.creatingkeepsakes.com
The magazine has layouts for 12" x 12" scrappers as well as 8 ½" x 11" and showcases both one- and two-page layouts. Along with new product showcases, Becky Higgins' sketches, Ali Edwards' regular column, Tips and Tricks, Hall of Famers' work and much more. The layouts provide supply lists and sometimes detailed instructions. There are great articles that cover a wide range of topics and techniques. This magazine has grown to such a size that it boasts a large online community, layout gallery, contests, e-mail newsletters, CK products for purchase, scrapbook conventions and more. They offer current page calls and submission guidelines on their website. Just follow the links to easily to submit on their website. Digital Scrapbooking - www.digitalscrapbooking.com
Digital Scrapbooking is a spin-off from Creating Keepsakes. After the publishers of Creating Keepsakes noticed the growing trend of digital scrapbooking and the success of several idea books, they began publishing Digital Scrapbooking. It's filled with the same type of columns as a non-digital magazine...tips and tricks, font help, digital page help, ideas for design, mini book ideas and more, all with the digital designer in mind! Digital Scrapbooking has its own website with online tutorials, current issue information, subscription service and online submission information. Memory Makers - www.memorymakersmagazine.com
The magazine has layouts for 12" x 12" scrappers as well as 8 ½" x 11" and showcases both one- and two-page layouts. It offers ideas for both traditional scrapping along with hybrid and digital ideas. The layouts include supply lists and sometimes have detailed instructions. The magazine has great in-depth articles, a large reader-submitted idea gallery, tips and tricks and work from its former Memory Maker Master winners. Something neat in every issue is the name and location of all contributors in the magazine. The magazine has a large online website with gallery, contests, tips and tricks, email newsletters, Memory Makers and other F & W products available for purchase, and much much more. You can also submit work through their website. Scrapbook Trends - www.scrapbooktrendsmag.com
Right off the bat you've noticed the price, haven't you? I would immediately respond that this magazine to me is more like a book, a coffee table book if you will. It's smaller, well-made and durable, because the pages are heavier weight. It's filled with beautiful layouts and great photography. One unique thing is they not only give a supply list but well-written instructions for making the layout. It's definitely not the same as a magazine but yet not quite so formal as a hardbound book. The magazine has a website at which you can view information on the current issue, order back issues, subscribe, read current submission requests and see their sister publications. Scrapbooks Etc - www.bhgscrapbooksetc.com
Scrapbooks Etc is a well-rounded magazine. They offer scrapbook layout ideas for both 12" x 12" and 8 ½" x 11" with a great mix of one- and two-page layouts. They have card ideas, home décor ideas, paper-piecing patterns, sketches of the layouts in the book, tool reviews, tips and tricks and much more. Their current issue boasted 258 winning ideas! They have a talented design staff that contributes great ideas along with interesting articles. The magazine also has its own website with a lot to offer, including galleries, blogs, webisodes for ideas, free classes, shopping, contests, links to their BH & G publication, email newsletters, links to submit and much more! Scrapbooking and Beyond - www.scrapbookingandbeyondmag.com
The magazine showcases in its current issue 40+ layouts. The magazine is smaller than others. However they offer detailed instructions for the layouts as well as supply lists. The magazine has a more intimate feel. Layout photos are nice and large making it easy to see the details. The magazine's website offers subscription service, information on the current issue, and nice, large photos of a layout or two and information on them. You will also find submission information and where you can find the magazine for purchase. Simple Scrapbooks - www.simplescrapbooksmag.com
Simple Scrapbooks was spun off Creating Keepsakes after readers and designers for the magazine saw a need for a "less is more" on their pages. Readers took to this and it has been going great ever since. The ideas are doable, simple, clean and very attractive. The magazine relates to all page styles, has great designers (such as Stacy Julian, Donna Downey, and Cathy Zielske) contributing and much much more! It has monthly features for mini books, feature designers, trash to treasure and more. The magazine has its own active website for sneak peeks into the current issue, contests, message board and galleries, online submission form and information, links to blogs, shopping for Simple Scrapbooks idea books and more.
