September 2007 Sketch Challenge

by Patter Cross (Sep 1, 2007)

Lately I have been creating layouts with lots of patterned paper layering. I love the look, and I thought it would be fun to create a sketch for this month doing just that. So, for the September sketch challenge, I layered three pieces of patterned paper, and then I put two white boxes on top of the paper. Those two boxes can be pictures, journaling boxes, more patterned paper, or whatever you choose to do with them. The flower and ribbon embellishments are there to give you an idea of where to put your embellishments. Of course, you can use any embellishments you wish. I asked four designers to use this sketch and make it their own. As you will see, some have one picture, some have two, one has turned the sketch, and everyone has different embellishing ideas.

Sarah Calaway

Sarah chose to use two pictures on her layout. She also added the flourishes to the upper right corner along with another flower on the left-hand side. I also love the sprinkles of bling she added, and the rub-on title is a perfect touch.

Shanna Lamb

Shanna also used two pictures on her layout. She was able to get a lot of text on her page. I loved all of the title work, the journaling, and the circles she added. This page just pops with all of the goodies she has here!

Brandy Lackey

Brandy used one picture and flipped the sketch which was perfect for that adorable photo. She has a lot of great elements on this page yet it does not distract from that great photo. I also love how she used the circles to match the patterned paper and the "frinkles." Great idea.

Marci Knecht

Marci used many layers here that just worked perfectly with the colors, the embellishments, the patterned title, everything. I love how she added the ribbon strip at the bottom of the page with her title for such a unique and awesome look.

For my layout, I used one photo then added a journaling box. I put part of the title on the photo since it was harder to fit it across this 9" x 9" page. I also inked all of my patterned paper pieces before layering them on the page. I like how it makes the paper stand out a bit more.

I hope you will have fun with this sketch. If you have not tried a layout layering patterned paper, give it a try. Stretch yourself. You might find you like it. Be sure to post your layouts in the gallery when you are done. We would love to see how it turns out!
