August 2007 Sketch Challenge
by Trish Dykes
(Aug 1, 2007)
This sketch came by way of the ‘chicken or the egg' theory. I actually started with an idea and then created the layout and the drawing at the same time. The end result was a layout that I really liked and also a workable sketch that seemed easy enough to duplicate. ![]() When I had finished the first layout, I thought that it would be fun to experiment with it in the 8.5" x 11" format. I used the same lines, but had to adjust the photo placement slightly to allow for the narrowed width of the paper. This time I added an additional element beside the journaling block and used two smaller embellishments in the lower left corner instead of a single one. ![]() Finally, I thought about giving the sketch a unique twist. I had read somewhere that a 12" x 12" sketch could be used in eight different ways. You could rotate it 90 degrees three times to get four different views and then you could flip it over (reverse) the design and rotate it around again. That is what I did for this layout. The sketch was rotated clockwise one turn and then flipped (reversed). I replaced the upper right embellishment with my title and the journaling block was replaced with an additional photo. ![]() As you can see, there are many variations available. Ramona and Maureen both created beautiful layouts using the same basic sketch, but altered it to fit the needs of their own photographs and styles. Hopefully you will find this sketch helpful when creating your next layout. ![]() |
