March 2007 Sketch Challenge

by Jennifer Sizemore (Mar 2, 2007)

I have a digital camera and the ability to print photos in whatever size I wish. But I have years of older photos, already processed in a 4" x 6" or smaller format. When I scrapbook, one of the hardest hurdles for me to overcome is scrapping multiple 4" x 6" photos. One method I have used to overcome that block is to use over and over again a composition that works, mixing it up enough to look different each time.

I created this month's sketch using one of my favorite composition designs and then asked five scrapbookers to use the sketch to scrap that traditional size of photo. Each of them created a layout that varied enough from the sketch to match their own style and to work with their photos.

That Ball by Patter Cross

Patter chose a 9" x 9" format for her interpretation of the sketch in this layout of her playful daughter. To downsize, she used two photos, and in place of the other two, she used patterned paper.

Reel Fun by Tara Daigle

Tara softened the angles of the layout by rounding several corners on photos and background paper. She also made her title a two-line title to create balance on the left side of this boyish page.

You are my Sunshine by Emma Clark

  • Paper: KI Memories
  • Letters: "sunshine" and "life" letters-Heidi Swapp
  • other letters: KI Memories
  • Stickers: KI Memories

Embellishments: rhinestone flowers-Me and My Big Ideas.

Emma used a whimsical style of letters for her title and subtitle, creating a carefree feel to the layout. She also balanced the photo cluster with a few flowers on the left.

Slumber Party by Libby Weifenbach

  • "Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows" kit by Sherri Tierney @ ElementalScraps.com
  • Alpha beads & flower (recolored): Just the Basics by Kimberly Giarusso
  • Black stitching: Jeanelle Paige @ Sweetdigicreations.com
  • Fonts: Impact, SP Purkage, and 2Peas Quirky

Libby used fun colors and fonts, using the sketch file as a template for her digital layout. She also used staples on each photo to help group the four photos as one element.

Red Decorations by Dianne Dahlin

  • Red paper and Ric-rac: Kitschmas Cheer Kit, Dani Mogstad
  • Red Stripe paper: Holly Days Kit, Nit Wit Collections
  • Red letters: Saffron Seal Symbols, Nik Terry
  • Font: Buttzilla

Dianne kept the focus on her beautiful photos by keeping the elements simple and almost monochromatic.

Hike Va. by Jennifer Sizemore

For my own layout, I shifted the subtitle just enough that it fit in the open space of the photograph. I also used a quote and a flower to fill space at the top and create balance with the flower below.
