Layout Topics Inspired by the Garage
How many people do you know that have a garage in which they can never fit their car? Are you even one of those people? Everything but the kitchen sink, and sometimes even that, can be found housed in those garages. The garage, for many of us, reflects a large portion of our lives and the stuff we collect along the way. Perhaps it is time to step back and scrap about the lives behind what we see in our garages. Here are just a few ideas to jumpstart your creativity for scrapbook layout topics - all based on items found in the home garage. Paint - I went out in to my garage a few days ago for some paint for an outlet cover. I counted 18 partially-used cans of interior house paint, all neatly labeled of course. All of those colors made me think that I should capture those wall color preferences on a scrapbook page, as home fashion changes as often as clothing fashion. Consider creating a layout about the colors in your home, or about a recent remodeling project. Hobbies and toys- My garage says a lot about what we do in our leisure time. It contains all sorts of hobby paraphernalia - from fishing poles and tackle boxes to bicycles and horseshoes. Because the camera usually stays inside during these leisure activities, I often forget to include these pastimes in my scrapbooks. Topics to cover from these items include the pastime itself, or the gear used in these pursuits. Gardening/yard- We used to live in a townhouse that had a yard the size of a postage stamp. We could mow the entire front yard with a weed whacker. Now, the tools and items we use on our yard easily take up the same amount of space as a small truck. We spend countless hours mowing, blowing, pruning and weeding. Someday, it may entertain a future generation to see that we actually used a rake to gather leaves during the fall months. Consider scrapbooking about the number of hours spent doing yardwork, how you feel about the chores in the yard, or who does those chores around your house. Automotive- I have owned exactly three cars in my life and my husband two more than that. Not a single one of those cars has found its way onto my scrapbook pages. Not only can you make a layout about the type of car you drive, but document how much time you spend in the car, where it takes you, how you chose it, whether or not you keep it clean and perhaps even how you describe your dream car. Tools- What would a garage be without a plethora of hand and electric carpentry tools? Does your household have a handyman, or do you push him aside to get your hands on that power saw? Try documenting the person who uses the tools in your home and on what type of projects. Old junk- Along one wall of our garage is a stack of boxes and other items that have been ejected from their homes inside the house. Outgrown toys, old wall prints, soccer cleats, a shoe rack, a filing cabinet, and other miscellaneous items bound for a future yard sale are piled up. All of these items say something about a time in our lives. Before they are tossed out, snap a picture and journal a page in their memory. Next time you go in your garage, look at it with your scrapbook eyes. I would bet that you find all sorts of inspiration for your layouts. Oh, and don't forget to take your camera for that shot of the dirty shoes at the doorway.
