Making Matchbook Albums
I adore making mini-books and matchbook albums are no exception. However I don't like how easy it is for them to start looking a bit shabby after being handled a time or two. I believe that I've hit on a wonderful solution with the book that I've designed. This book looks like a matchbook album on the outside but when it's opened there are page protectors inside to keep my layouts safe and clean. The chipboard pattern sizes can be adjusted to fit any size of protectors. The directions for this album are for protective sleeves that measure 5.5" x 7.5". Supplies Necessary: - matchbook pattern
- chipboard
- 4 sheets of 12" x 12" Scrapbook Paper
- Memory Mount adhesive
- sponge brush
- bone folder
- 4 eyelets
- ribbon
- embellishments of choice
- eyelet tools
- 5.5" x 7.5" page protectors
Directions: - Begin by cutting the pieces of chipboard that are needed in the sizes indicated on the pattern.
- Trim two matching sheets of patterned paper to 6.5" x 12". This will be the outside of the album.
- Position the shapes as shown in the pattern so that only about 1/8" is between each strip. Use sponge brush to apply a light coat of adhesive to the chipboard shapes, leaving ½" border on left, top and bottom.
- Glue the first 6.5" x 12" piece of paper across the pieces, starting with a ½" border to the left side of section A. The paper will stop about 1/3 of the way into section E. Begin gluing the second piece at the left side of this piece of chipboard so that it overlaps the first sheet. Trim patterned paper on the right side leaving a ½" border.
- Apply a small amount of glue to the paper border all around and fold it up over the chipboard as if wrapping a gift. Add weight and allow drying time.
- After the glue dries, it's time to cover the other side of the chipboard. This will be the inside of the album. Cut remaining patterned paper so that it measures 5.75" x 12".
- Apply adhesive to the wrong side of one of the cut pieces of patterned paper. Position it on the raw side of the chipboard so that it's centered and only a small amount of the first paper used shows. Again, there will be a section of section E that isn't completely covered. Trim the remaining strip of patterned paper to 5.75" x 7.25" and glue it so that it is centered over section E and overlaps the previously applied paper.
Use the bone folder over the entire surface, making sure that the pieces are all adhered together, especially in the areas between the chipboard. Apply weight until dry. - Lay a page protector on the album so that it is in position over section C with the holes closest to section B. Mark where the holes are. Use eyelet tools to insert eyelets.
- Fold the chipboard up to create the book shape. Mark where eyelets need to be inserted in section A by drawing a dot through the eyelets in section C. Use eyelet tools to insert eyelets.
- Thread a 15" strip of ribbon through the eyelets in C. Now thread each side of the ribbon through both holes in each of the page protectors. Last, thread through eyelets in A and tie tightly.
- Decorate cover as desired and begin making your interior pages.
