Make Great Use of Mini Books

by Denise Gormish (Nov 1, 2005)

When my daughter had a school assignment to record the titles and create drawings of the books she had read over the summer, I started thinking about how to arrange all that information in a creative way. I was stumped until I looked in my scrapbook supplies. In my supplies I had a pre-made tag book. The tag book was the perfect size and created an effortless and creative display for her assignment.

Mini books or tag books provide an easy and fun way to record information. Here are some great ideas for using mini albums:

  • Record Keeping. There are so many records and statistics to keep. Make it hassle free but fun by using a tag or mini book. Use it for typical record-keeping jobs. Girl Scout leaders can track badges in a mini book. Shot and health records can be kept in a mini book. Get creative and fun. How about keeping track of how many states you’ve visited with a mini book? I kept track of my daughter’s drama performances using a pre-made mini book.

  • Social Events. Tag and mini books can be used at social events. For example, my daughter used a mini book for a writing game at her birthday party. Each child wrote a sentence to a story, then passed it on to another girl, and so on. The end result was a story in a beautiful pre-assembled book. Consider other ideas such as using a book for Thanksgiving guests to write why they are thankful, or when hosting a game night use a mini book to record the scores.

  • Gifts. Tag and mini books create quick and personal gifts. Beyond the regular scrapbook idea, consider other projects. For a Harry Potter fan, my daughter and I created a spell book by writing Harry Potter spells inside the book. With some inking, a title and content, the book was easy and a hit with the recipient.

  • Student Projects. Students get assigned all kinds of projects and reports. Make it enjoyable by incorporating a tag or mini book. Tag or mini books can easily hold projects such as a reading log, an ongoing science experiment, writing samples, spelling aids, and book reports.

  • Journal. Tag and mini books make perfect journals for short term or single events. Events you might consider journaling in a tag or mini book include a special trip, your birthday, a holiday, or your favorite season. You could just write in the journal or include photographs, quotes and other embellishments as well.

If you choose to use a pre-made book instead of making your own, most of the choices have been made for you as to color and general design. As a consequence, you can add just a few creative touches to decorate your mini book and be done in no time.

  • Title. A simple title suggesting the general theme of the tag or mini book can be adhered with letter stickers, rubber stamps, foam stamps, rub-ons or pen. My children wanted to keep track of national parks they visited so I made them a tag book. Inside I listed all the national parks and monuments. The outside title was created with foam stamps dipped in green acrylic paint and white rub-on letters.

  • Embellishments. Simple embellishments can add a personal touch to a mini book. Consider using ribbon, metals, monograms, chipboard shapes, quotes and paper flowers.

When faced with a project, event, record keeping or journaling, make the task easier by using mini books and tag books. Find one that fits your content needs. Then, add your own personal touches to create a pleasing and fun display.
