Leatherbooks Handmade Albums
I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about scrapbooking and she mentioned a woman who makes handmade leather albums and said they were really beautiful. “Send me her web site,” I said, “I’d love to take a look.” Really beautiful was an enormous understatement. These leather hand-bound albums were some of the most gorgeous, intricately decorated, and unique designs I’ve ever seen. I’ve never come across another album that was in even the same category. Marcia, the artist with a background in various art media, creates amazing masterpieces out of each hand-bound and decorated book. Leather, sheet copper and unique metal parts from cameras, telephones, clocks and even airplanes all manage to find their way into the covers of her albums, creating amazing one-of-a-kind covers with layers of dimension and textiles.
The covers aren’t the only things that are impressive. Each album is hand-bound using the classic 6th Century binding process. The albums aren’t limited to the standard square design. Curved edges created by tearing the edges of the pages are a distinctive design in many of her albums. Hand-carved designs covered with leather are the personal touch that makes each album a custom heirloom. Wedding, heritage, and special occasion albums all make excellent candidates for these stunning books. However, don’t set these albums on a shelf to collect dust. They deserve their own pedestal to be enjoyed daily. The only downfall I can find—the price reflects the work and quality put into each album. Expect to pay anywhere from $150 to $2500 for these works of art.
Marcia creates and encourages custom design work for your special album. Bible recovering and binding of works such as a thesis or an authored book are also available. She designs boxes, journals, necklace books, and refillable binding albums. Visit the Leatherbooks web site: www.leatherbooks.info
